The battery backup from my computer managed to raise the temp in the incubator by 4 degrees before it went kaput. The hot hand warmers seem like a good idea for small incubators, Diane have you tried doing that in a big cabinet incubator though?

I have not tried that in a cabinet. Maybe one or two per shelf so the heat makes it to the top?

Here is an example of a solar generator. The large solar panel collects sunlight, the large battery unit stores the electric power...and it has normal household plugs.

Expensive, but...... it wouldn't take many egg losses like that one to pay for itself. The future may bring more extreme weather and brown-outs etc.

ETA, I see the gizmo above got negatives in some reviews... There are others on the market, and some even have wheels-- Infact, I think I am going to go charge my solar generator right now--can't remember the brand -- but it does have wheels..and I did use it when I had power out in one incubation. There are pretty frequent power outages here..although they usually don't last more than 6-hours on the outside. (Had a big one the day of the last CL Club meeting for example - wouldn't you know?)


The solar panel is out doors, the battery unit isn't weather proof on the one I have. -- I think a severe hail storm would damage solar panel - But a severe hail storm can do a lot of damage to a lot of stuff.

Makes me want to incubate some chicks right NOW!! So adorable.

lonnyandrinda - sorry for your troubles and sadness, I hope your hatch has some success and your weekend some relief.

GaryDean26 - Brinsea also makes smaller incubators in the 100's of dollars range that have an automated adjustable cooling cycle.

faykokoWV - thanks for the hot hand warmer idea. I've also found an UPS (uninterrupted power supply) battery back-up is a useful connection for the incubator - especially to maintain the digital settings during short power outages.

The chick I posted in a picture above is in a Brinsea mini that uses a cooling cycle. You can turn the cooling off if you don't want to use it. I didn't use it the first time I hatched with it, but I used it this time. Would need to try a few more times before I could say it helped or not.

16 weeks old. Comb is too big, but how is the rest looking?

Pullet in front has developed a red face this week and is clucking and singing the eggs song. These girls are also 16 weeks.

Bama they are looking pretty good so far! I can't tell if it's the lighting or does the cockerel have a slight yellowish caste to his hackles? If the chestnut doesn't spread any more I would say he is a good start! Yes the comb is off but as long as it doesn't have any sprigs you can breed for better.

Quick question on CCL's. What is the leg coloring supposed to be? I think its yellow, and I just got some pullets that are showing a darker color, one is even olive green. I'm wondering if it is a sign of crossbreeding?

Yellow. Some of my babies start with a greenish tint but they have all grown out of it. I would wait and see.

Someone else was talking about a green leg the other day. They are supposed to be yellow, but I'd give them until 6 months or so to make sure they won't change. My girls started with willow but reached bright yellow by maturity, and then of course it fades if they're going broody or have been laying a while.

I had to go out and look at him. It is the lighting, not yellow. No sprigs either. Hope the pullets small combs will help reduce the next generations comb size. The pullet in the back has a very small comb.
