I can also testify to one broody throwing off the whole bunch. Not CL related, but one of my JG girls has been broody for a couple weeks now. I won't let her sit because she's a terrible mother, but her persistency has thrown off almost all of my other layers. Since most of my 45 chickens have not reached POL yet, out of the whole bunch I only have 1 lonely little BSL that is valiantly trying to lay me a pretty little brown pullet egg almost every day.

Separate topic, I think my youngest CL roo that I am growing out must have a few mocking bird genes in him. Over the last few days, I swear he is making what sounds like a squealing pig noise. I keep thinking that I hear a wild piglet close to the house, look over, and there he is. It's the darnedest noise from a chicken that I've ever heard. He's 13 weeks old and I haven't heard him try to crow yet (our other CL roo started at just 11 weeks). If this pig noise IS his new crow, I don't really know what to think about that...

Oh dear lord, I hope not! With the oldest CL roo we thought our dryer was breaking (he was crowing on the back porch which is behind the laundry room), and now I have a pig. SMH...

That is really interesting though, because people often seem to have broodies come in batches - one goes, they all go. Makes sense doesn't it, because being broody is due to hormone changes in a hen, and that interferes with the normal hormone cycle when they ARE laying eggs.

absolutely, i had five this spring, spaced out over across about 4 weeks, and now four more in july (one is a repeat) -- that's 8 out of my 12 year-old laying hens this year. got to love heritage breeds, i suppose!

of those 8, one was a CL and one a CL x penedesenca, which according to the Henderson's Chicken Chart is supposed to be a "non-setter." I guess she doesn't have internet access & so didn't know...

Unless my little hooligan lays an egg TODAY her score is goose egg for this week. -- When I got her back she only weighed 3 1/4 pounds though....she doesn't have enough to her to make an egg --but she's happy. Then our temps -- 110, 108, 107 --- killer heat...... (The area the chickens are is 99 though -thank heaven) Yep I do have wierd names....

It's Me(d)Cre --- because her crest is Medium -- but I kind of call her Mee-creee. :O)

OOOhhhh so adorable.... just make sure if he has a strange voice he stays in silent movies and no 'talkies' -- although having a distinctive crow will always let you know where he is. IT will probably normalize as lonnyandrinda said!!

If you can, I'd love to hear an audio clip of his crow! For that matter, everyone who has a rooster with a funny or notable crow. I've found recording and uploading a few seconds' video is easiest. . .

we need a little smiley of a chicken on a computer -- not just that one of a happy face on a computer.....

Know what else? Henderson doesn't have CLs yet, I think because they aren't recognized by APA but they are ALSO 'non-sitters' - and I hope they never get the memo -- because I love it when the hen does all the work -- and I think hen-raised chickens have a head-start in life compared with brooder raised chickens --because they get out there and start foraging much earlier -- and mom is right there doing a demo. And it is so cute to see a mom and chicks. I also read that a female raised by a mother hen who will sit is more likely to brood and raise her own chicks.
