Cream Legbars

Aaakkk! I didn't realize that is was so technical. I am really interested in the breed and thought I would purchase some chicks. I looked up on a local sales page and saw that they were selling for rather high prices so I went to good old Ebay and found some hatching eggs. The listing I bought was for 6+ eggs at $10.99. I thought that was a pretty good deal, but does that mean I am going to get scruffy looking chicks that aren't anywhere near breed standard?? I was thinking that eventually I could sell some of their fertile eggs but I don't want to sell a mutt version if that makes sense? I am still really excited to my little blue egg layers and will love them all the same I am sure, but knowing whether there is some sort of standard as to how they should look will determine if I will sell the eggs or not.

Cost is sometimes something to look at but it isn't always the deciding factor on whether or not someone has good quality birds vs not good quality. Some people just enjoy hatching chicks or selling eggs and sell them low cost. While others try their best to stay in the price range that most others sell for.

Yes this breed has a standard that is being drafted and lots of people are doing their best to breed to what they believe is a close representation to the Standard. While others Im sure are just breeding everything they have and selling eggs and chicks to make money or just because they decided to not breed to the SOP.

Do you have any pics from the ebay seller that you may be able to post?

Thank you for your response. Here are the pics he had listed:

I think these look like some of the better Ebay stock. If they are good layers and healthy birds they should give you a good start. You will have things you will want to work on and improve (rounded front line to the hens that extend past the beak, larger crests, cream colored plumage, etc.), There will be plenty of people here willing to answer question and help you be successful with your flock though.

X2 They aren't show quality but they do look like average US stock. Definitely workable. Good luck with your hatch, shipped eggs are like roulette, sometimes they hatch good sometimes they don't!

Thank you so much! I do want to be responsible with what I raise and I am so glad this community exists for help!!

He said he would gather them fresh the day he ships them so I am crossing my fingers that they will do alright! Wish me luck :)

Hi Ruralpearls,
I too just ordered fertile hatching eggs from a couple different sources hoping to, eventually after a lot of hard work, have healthy, strong, to the standard breeders. (in addition to whatever else hatches as we are similar to chicks and bond quite quickly. So I envision several more coops in our future! We are now ready to start incubating in the next 24 hrs or so - did not want to pay $147.00 each for day old chicks from GFF! But I will certainly post pics, and in the meantime hope for the best.

I hope all goes well with your incubation! Post pics if you get a chance. I'd like to follow along with what is going on with your hatch as I will be putting mine in around the 12th of May. I have some duck eggs in right now that are due to hatch the 8th of May. I am having my eggs shipped to me on the 10th and I am excited to see how blue they are in person. I have seen photos of really deep blue eggs and some that are almost white with a tinge of blue. I am hoping for darker eggs. Best of luck!
