Cream Legbars

Thank you! It's good to hear his antics aren't too unusual for the breed. He's really a sweet guy and only crows in the morning and evening when he hears me and wants attention (treats). I rechecked the calendar and he was actually 6 weeks in the second picture, not 5, but still seems a bit mature at that age. Apparently it may be a CLB trait. Good to know! I have another roo that's a bit younger at only 4 weeks who hasn't yet made anything other than normal chick sounds so far. It will be interesting to see when that changes.
Early maturing seems to be a CLB cockerel trait and 'just in time' seems to be the female. I think that the males reach maturity quite a bit before the females, who take their time....

Some say the breed is noisy -- but like you my cockerel only crows when he wants to announce himself. He is much more quiet than the other roosters who have lived here. Oh yes, and of course he needs to crow to wake up the sun. I have some construction going on to rebuild the front porch of this old house---and the saws, hammering, boards clammering, air compressor, nail gun--- He will kind of flinch when something starts up --and then move between the 'threat' and his hens. What a gallant guy.

One of my hens has started laying the most amazing blue color of egg. It really makes the other ones look a bit lame. The color has just gotten much more intense in the last 2 weeks or so. Has anyone else had a hen whose egg color has gotten deeper over time? I really have to figure out who it is. I thought I had it figured out, but was incorrect. I will have to follow the chickens around some more.

The picture is a little misleading as it makes the other eggs look white. However the other eggs are kinds of a robins egg blue - standard legbar looking eggs. But then there's this one hen that is laying some BRIGHT eggs.

Yep...the other ones look white. Can you get a similar photo your range of colors nest to a White Egg?

I have hens that are laying more blue colored eggs, and hens that are laying more a greenish eggs. My darkest foundation hens is the one that laid the bluest eggs, so I don't think that there is any linkage between feathery color and green eggs.

My brightest colored eggs are the ones with the Greenish tint. The brown bloom really brings out the color. RyeRanch do you have a color reference for these eggs (OAC cards or Auracana color cards?).

lonyandrind & babymakes6 I love the color on your cockerels. I hope to eventually see those colors in my flock. :)

I have to get a new boy, my Olive egg cockerel that was in the same pen, pinned him to the ground and hurt his leg so bad it was pushed out to the side and he could no longer walk on it. So we had to put him down. He was a nice looking boy and was nice, hard to come by in a cockerel. I still have two girls and the Olive Eggers went out to the main coop since they wanted to act all grown up

Michele, I can help you. I have several boys and would be willing to give you one. :)

Really I will take you up on that. I have peeps that want some and i had to cancel there order. As i recall you don't live that far from me do you? I work in Wooster and live in West Salem. I will Pm you if you really want to rid yourself of one.

I am about 3 hours from Wooster. I would be happy to meet you somewhere.

He would be free.
Mine are only 3-4 months old though, so he won't be breeding quite yet.

Curtis, were you talking about Vanilla Ice in my pictures? He died a week after I got him, but I do have two more that are very promising. One of mine was a very dark chick, but he died this winter. Another is starting to show a bit too much chestnut, but they are all still young.
Michele, I will make sure you get one of the better ones.

I don't have a color card for reference, but it is on my list of things to aquire in the near future. I do not have any white egg layers, so unfortunately I can't compare there. I was actually thinking of heading down to the paint store to see if any of their stock colors are a match. At least I could then use that as a baseline from egg to egg.

That is a gorgeous shade of blue. I can't wait until my juvenile CL start laying.

Here is my little bent-comb guy - you can see his hairdoo behind the comb. Thinking ahead I may keep him for a breeding project making sex-links with Delawares - imagine the crests!

I hatched out some Legbar x chocolate bantam orp chicks and they were crested. I sold of most but kept a pair. The mother was the orp and both chicks are barred but the female is sporting a small crest and her type seems to be leaning towards the orp so far. I think she'll turn out quite cute. I have another that is Legbar mom and Orp dad but too young to tell anything right now except that it is not barred and appears tiny so I'm thinking more orp type there to. I might keep one of the more golden boys that has a super crest and maybe do a crested EE pen with a bunch of different female breeds. Fun to think about.
My original rooster had a slightly floppy comb but good color and since he was all I really had and spent some good $$ on him I used him. I have to admit it was not as curvy as the picture above but he threw straight combs pretty regularly so you could test breed and see what you got. The roosters are much cheaper and more readily available now however and with the new line roos coming up I'm sure there will be birds aplenty this spring.

I love my Legbars but my BCM yolks are still the most orange ones in my omelets.

The snowflakes outside just got twice as large, twice as fast flowing and seem to be twice as much from just a half hour ago...here we go....

To those of you who have CL in cold climates, any comments on the conditions that your birds can handle, or extra measures you take?
I was really surprised to see the photo of a CL in snow!
I haven't been able to find any information on how the CL's handle temperatures and weather, beyond warm and balmy.
Also interested in the same information for CL crosses, such as with Penedesenca's aka "olive eggers".

If this has already been covered somewhere else, or in this thread, please help me find it.
Thank you.
