Cream Legbars

Rinda,

This has been a much cooler summer than anticipated (at least here in VA). I received two Rees line 6 chick CLB shipments from GF and each had one DOA. The others were very lethargic and deeply chilled. Got them home to a warm brooder and the remaining 5 in each shipment perked up and are doing fine. Who would ever have thought that we would be worried about chilled chicks in July and August!

Yep. My first shipment of Rees chicks arrived the week we had several days with a HIGH of only 80 degrees in mid July- I think we broke a record this summer of low-highs! But Jenny was afraid to put in a heat pack because of the heat in Florida and Georgia where the chicks route through coming to Oklahoma.

Aloha e Rinda,

A couple months ago, there were some beautiful Spitzhaubens available on EBay. One was so awesome looking I wanted to get some, but Iʻm in enough trouble as it is. Thereʻs a person selling araucanas from Louisiana, I think they might be one of the two who had awesome white/silver Spitzʻs. I think the nicest one spelled it wrong or something but the oneʻs in their pictures were like too nice to believe. So searching for spitz might not bring them up. I havenʻt seen their ad in a few months and my Internet Explorer is broken and thatʻs where I saved the link. Good luck on that.

I have a grandaughter of yours that is turning out very nice!

Aloha, Puhi

I'm glad to hear it!

I actually found a local friend with a mature quad of Spitzhaubens that she decided she was ready to part with. I also picked up a few eggs from a breeder at a big poultry show a few hours away and have two nice cockerels from them, one is in with the ladies right now. I have a few chicks from them already! I'll make the pictures small so they don't clutter the thread too much. ;)

I just started hatching a new generation and my first chick hatched a few days ago. She is a pullet and an only hatcher. Luckily I have a batch due to hatch in 2 days and them 2 more batches in the 2 weeks to follow.

So just so Im accurate when describing generations I might need clarification. I started with my "Starter Trio" and that is what I called them. Their offspring was MY First Generation. Then Males from my first generation crossed back to their mothers make offspring being my Second Generation. Is this correct? And does each new set of offspring from the previous offspring down the line count as a generation.

On the topic of breeding and generations I have another question. I currently have my small flock to work with. My starter cock was crossed to 2 unrelated hens to give me some offspring to grow out, then the starter cock was culled and I kept one of his sons as my main boy. My main cockerel is in a pen now with my 2 original hens (one is his mother Im not sure which) I will also include in that pen daughters of his and daughters of his brother(the brother was also crossed to the same original 2 hens) the second brother kept jumping the fence so because it wasnt controlled breeding Im not sure which daughters belong to which of the brothers. The second brother has also recently been culled.

In a second pen I was thinking of putting a Son from one of the brothers and put in the daughters of my Starter rooster(they are the sisters of my main boy and would be I guess Aunts of this new male. Im not 100% on how to pair up relation wise to get the best results so I am hoping this will give me the most options.

I really really wish I had a better idea of exactly who fathered and mothered each chick so I can get the maximum usage of genes without breeding too closely related. Id like to keep a closed flock for a while and don't want to end up with too much inbreeding.

I think I need to start banding with a color code to keep track of the relations to each other. I hope this makes sense any advice, tips or comments are welcome.

I thought I would post a few pics of my pullets since we have been seeing so much about roosters lately. These pics arent the best angles but here are 3 pullets I kept from my starter cock bird. I like them a lot so far though Im hoping they get better crest color as they age and molt some feathers.

pullet 1 is roughly 9 weeks old

pullet 2 - 15weeks old

pullet 3 -15weeks old

What lovely pullets, seeing your 9 week old has me convinced that my pullet is a lot younger than the 8 weeks I was told she was when I got her last sat, she is the same size as my 9 week old bantam chicks, here she is
