Good morning, I have cl from Greenfire that were hatched in September. I'm trying to choose top 2 Roos. Only 1 is really what I would consider cream, so he's in even though his comb isn't perfect ( he's got 7 1/2points), but his comb is pretty straight & he's crested. The other roo is brightly colored and had a ginormous comb at a week old. These are the two largest of the group too. I guess my question is: is 17 weeks too soon to pick Roos?

Welcome to BYC! So in CA it's 6AM - not even light yet? LOL Wow has it been 17 weeks since Sept - I have some Sept hatched and lost track of the time. They change a LOT -- mine are just starting to get their saddle feathers - sickles and true hackles. One little guy is like a porcupine he has so many feathers poking in and I bet it hurts. One thing I have noticed in mine is that they tend to get lighter as they get adult plumage. Also at this age -- their feathers sometimes get a lot of random chestnut that goes away. If you can only keep one -- and you have one with a good comb and crest -- then he is for sure your keeper. I think getting a good comb can be a challenge in the breed. Comb will continue to grow as the cockerel matures -- so maybe that is the signal to cull the one with the ginormous comb--- it probably will just get bigger.

You may want to post picts so other forum participants can weigh in on the photos---but I think you need to have 10-posts before you can post photos......

ETA - you could go to "new members" and welcome 7 people...and then tell them you are just firing up too - and presto - you will have your 10 BYC posts and can put up photos.

Thanks ChicKat! I've been a lurker for a long time, but need to get posting, so maybe I can find some of these Roos a good home. Good point on the big comb guy. He probably won't be able to hold his head up if his baby comb was any indication. I am pleased with the pullets coloring. I'll try to get pics up soon.

Cant wait to see some pics. Are these Rees line or the other lines from GFF? How many males do you have to choose between?
