Cream Legbars

Hi all! I've been
caf.gif
hanging out here for a while learning about this breed as I patiently (very very patiently) await my first two CL pullets. They are coming from four hours away and I've been waiting on their friend who comes for business every once in a while. The last time he came was the one week we were away

So, I wait still. Meanwhile, it's given my husband and I more time to prepare some quarantine pens and another coop.

On the discussion of feed up above, are any of you fermenting the feed? We started this with the 4 week old Marans we got 5 weeks ago and their growth and feathering in has been phenomenal. They are so healthy. I'm working on getting our other babies onto the fermented feed. Basically, if you take whatever you are feeding and ferment it more nutrients (including amino acids needed for protein) will be available to be digested and thus absorbed.

Here is a great article and simple how-to on it https://tikktok.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/fermented-feed-faq/

Here is a quick excerpt on the nutritional benefit:

Superior nutrition
Fermenting creates new vitamins; specifically B vitamins, and new nutrients. Some of those nutrients are amino acids. The soaking and fermenting also breaks down the anti-nutrients and toxins in the grains that prevent the digestion of available nutrients.

Fermenting also produces basically no waste as does feeding dry. I highly recommend this method

Thanks for all of your contributions as I learn about this breed. It's nice that this is an active and supportive thread!

We FF in winter and serve wet mash mixed with a bit from the day before in the summer. Love it! :D
Can't wait for pics of the new chicks everyone is seeing! Congratulations to all!

Well, so far just the one CL has hatched. No other pips. I removed all the chicks today because the incubator is really stinking so hopefully I didn't jeopardize anything. No peeping, no pipping, no rocking eggs. I am leaving them in for at least another day just to make sure.

I was wrong about the one being a pullet, once it dried off it was clear it is a little cockerel! I have been too busy to take pics today but will get one tomorrow.

X2 (it's my job to go around after cp and say X2) Good luck with the rest.....

Moved my little guys out to the big brooder tonight :) hopefully I will get some pictures tomorrow. They sure are growing fast and are very healthy chicks. Also I had 2 of my own eggs hatch under a broody hen! 2 little pullets :) I probably won't keep them since I know they won't be crested, but they will be nice blue egg layers for someone or for my layer flock if I do keep them

My few from the earlier hatch are just over 10 weeks and one of the boys is working on finding his voice. When I let them out in the yard while I cleaned the coop this weekend one of the boys (not sure if its the one who is trying to crow) grabbed the little girl and acted like he was going to mount her. I scolded him saying she was a little young for that kind of thing

but he paid me no attention at all. I normally keep them separate but let them all out for some sunshine and play time. Lots of little sparring matches broke out with boys and girls alike but nothing major. I have to say having the Pita Pintas in the cages with them seems to have helped tame them a bit.

For me, the males mature enough before the females that I usually keep them separate. Enough stress on the pullet to grow up to POL with out being harassed IMO
