Just to finish up my rant i need to find out who's in charge of this cream legbar club and who the regional directors are. If i see that the people who are starting this club are the ones saying things like the barn before paint analogy doesn't apply here, or maybe the ones drooling over very bad form CL just because of the color, or the ones who say your birds are perfect when there is obviously very bad form flaws.

If the CL Club is going allow crappy form and try to change the standard to better accommodate the poor quality birds we have received in America then i can see the ameraucana vs Araucana fight happening with the CL and Two if not more clubs being founded and working towards different things. I really hope the club promotes the standard that has already been set and that the club doesn't say ahhhh how about for the American standard we allow our crappy form traits to just be the new American version. I really think if Cl are going to be accepted into the APA then we should do our best towards working on the standard that's been around longer than any of you have been alive. And we shouldn't be negative in our critique of other peoples birds just more open and positive in working towards the same goals.

I am not much of a club joiner - not a lot of spare time - but it seems to me that what I have read of the club is that they are working hard to establish guidelines for standards that sound very much like the english ones. While it does seem like color dominates many discussions, myself and several others here have often stated that type is most important to us. Blanket insinuations and harsh criticism of the way others choose to breed their birds will not encourage people to change. As time goes by, the best quality birds will always have more value than those that are of poor quality, just like they do in every breed.

I have not at any time felt that anyone here has tried to push their birds on me, substandard or not.

The dream team is a trio of 1) Blaze, the cream colored cockerel from you, 2) Robin, the cream colored hen from ChicKat, and 3) Lilly my foundation hen.

I currently have two of Lilly's daughter's and one of Robin's daughters in the pen with Blaze. So It guess we will just call this the color pen.

I was mainly trying to say that their simple comments gives that impression especially when they post a pic of their Cl Right after. I'm not saying they are actually purposely pushing their birds. That would be hilarious if they actually were, looking at all the flaws their CL have per standard.

Cool you jets there. No need to alienate a whole bunch of people who are trying to figure out WHAT cream legbars are supposed to look like and HOW to breed them to better them. Most of us are brand new to breeding, too. If you aren't willing to research the club, ask questions, and find out what's really going on without biting everyone's heads off then you have no right to spout off. Yes there has been a lot of negativity towards color- because for us newbies it's the most obvious thing we know needs to be fixed. Type is first and foremost. We are trying to figure this out TOGETHER. When we have repeatedly asked for what exactly the type should look like- in pictures we can all understand- we don't get much feedback. So instead of griping why don't you help solve the problem and post some photos showing us what the type should look like?

You have no idea how many HOURS AND HOURS we have all put in to try to figure all this out and create an organization that can support the approval of the APA for an SOP for the Cream Legbar, and to tie the members together to support each other and create the best gene pool of birds we can find. We have Walt Leonard, poultry judge and Chairman of the APA Standards Committee, behind us and helping us craft the language and get started on the approval process.

Sorry if I come across sharp. I myself volunteer about 20 hours per week to the club efforts to get it up and running. It is a bit of a slap in the face that we have tried all along to do things right and then have people who have no idea what's going on tell us we are going about it "wrong" when they are not even trying to help. Why don't you join the club, and if it's not what you feel it should be put your money where your mouth is and help us make it better.

thats exactly what i was saying i need to do. and i said allot of "ifs" becaues i have no clue. Thanks. also most of my complaining comes from people who discourage others and then praise poor quaility. like you said there are allot of newbies so my main problem is people who discourage when they have no clue what someone has(as far as color goes). only that person will know what they have only after they have hatched lots of chicks thats when they will know what their working with.

With a gene pool like we have and allot of us starting out with no cream or single cream gene birds as newbies like you mentioned there needs to be allot of positive reinforcement and encouragement not people who instantly put down what someone else has

I recently I won an auction listing that included some cream leg bar chicks as part of a mixed chick variety pack from a reliable breeder. As they have grown out 2 of the cream leg bars have developed extreme crossed beaks. I let the breeder know but was wondering if this is a common problem with Cream legbars?

No, I have hatched probably 100 CL chicks and have never had a cross beaked one. I have had one Black Copper Maran that had a cross beak this bad- it didn't hatch but when I did my weekly eggtopsy I could see it.

From a quick search it looks like it CAN be genetic, but it can also be caused by incorrect incubation, in particular low incubation temperature.

ETA: and some breeds are more prone to it than others. It is caused by a skull deformity and if severe can also affect the brain and eyes.

So sorry that you got deformed chicks. This is the first time I have ever heard about this in a CL.
