heehee we are actually beaten out in the weirdness department by a club of mushroom growers! Any South members of the Cream Legbar Club, PM me if you don't have one yet. I still have a few OAC's left and I can get a really good deal on them if we need more!

Thank you -- Yes, I lost Grace and 4-chicks to a raccoon attack. The predator(s) lifted the floor of the external nesting box part of the broody coop and gained access. Devistating.

Maybe I missed a post, this was a recent loss? I'm so sorry.

I am so sorry. I lost a large part of my flock a few years ago to raccoons. They can be so awful to chickens.

I am always trying to outsmart predators, how am I supposed to know? I would appreciate shared advice/experiences. If I can find it, there was a good resource that explained some predator habits...

Regarding the broody CCL pullet.
She has been laying for about 6 weeks.
She stole the nesting box that was loaded with eggs, but then after a day, an older broody candidate pushed her out. The pullet moved over and held on to a fairly empty nest for a few days.

They were both pretty pancaked down, eyes at half mast and ignored the end of the day rituals, until I threw some cracked corn into the coop. They jumped out of their nests before the corn hit the floor =)

It seems like the pullet was playing house, but the hen-candidate is back on it today...always something new!

I cant help thinking that the pullet next to my (photo bomber!) polish looks like cruella deville, she looks like she has a fluffy coat on and a bad black hat. Few more weeks and maybe the three of them will be fully feathered.
