Cream Legbars

Ooh, Kestlyn, you can't say that and NOT post a picture!

2/15 cream legbar eggs hatched Tuesday 5-14-13. I dont know if they will make it. It has to be humidity. I did a dry incubation for the first 17 days and then did 60% for lockdown. These two hatched with omphalitis. Eggs were not dirty. hovabator double sanitized. They are eating and drinking and are not heat seeking, so that is encouraging, so far...... I know that can change though. But I just wanted to share the pic of the boy. His color is very different than my other boy who was more brown. And this one has the most vivid yellow on his head.

Best wishes for your babies Bama! I sometimes have to teach the little CLBs to go to the heat (gently push them under), but by day 2 in the brooder they get it.

Just for you Rinda...London Fog at 5 weeks!

Already watching over Diana and Kate!

Its your eyes that are good with stuff like that

The ideal score was zero--so your eyes are very accurate!

Do you have a gram scale you could use to track weights? I got a food one at Target that wasn't too expensive. Not sure your reference for the large size? The eggs that you gave me ranged from 45.2 to 58.0grams with most right in the middle. Of the two that hatched A would be considered Medium and B a Large.

The 2 pullets that hatched A and B (all weights in grams):
Initial egg weight A:50.4 B:56.7
Chick wt at hatch: A:35.0 B:36.8
3 days A:43.4 B:45.0
7 days A:60.9 B:58.8
17 days A:141 B:125

So Beatrix came from a larger egg and hatched 12 hours earlier (pipped 24 hours earlier) than Agatha. Agatha is growing faster than Beatrix and started to pass up her sister at about a week.
So did Agatha come from my A pen then if i was to guess. I'm starting to have a change of thought. I'm now thinking the A pen represents more of the leghorn traits. And my B pen Is more CL looking. The Leghorn has the bigger smother rounded earlobes, a bit bigger, and longer carriage length I believe(i could be wrong). After i looked at the Reese birds on her website in the UK and i went out and looked at my CL pens all the sudden my other B pen male looked like a better CL to me. I think i was drawn to the cleaner look of the A pen as far as form but I'm starting to think my best CL might just come from the B pen. All in all i think my A pen is heading more towards the look of those Silver Leghorns posted a while back. And I'm thinking the B pen is actually a better representation of CL. Maybe someone who has also raised Brown leghorn can tell us if they noticed the brown leghorn growing out faster than their CL have.

I noticed you use an eco glow also. Those save so much power over a traditional heat lamp. The lack of attraction light was a worry to me, i did notice they took a lil bit longer to get used where to go for their heat. Have you liked using your eco glow. also love the chicks. at 5 weeks old and seeing your chicks crest forming already i think i might have some of mine coming out crestless.

Marvelous chicks!!!!!!!!!!!

do all of them have yellow eyes?
For some reason, maybe because I use inside pens at first???, all of my chicks start with yellow eyes and lighter combs. When they're older, and outside with grass visitation (I still use pens most of the time) the eyes turn bay and the combs darken up.

, but I do sometimes have one little cockeral...always a cockeral lol...who gets lost outside of it the first night! I just stuff him back under and he'll be fine. I keep it on the lowest height setting and by 3 weeks the chicks are already out of it sleeping together at night. Which is perfect for me since I move them to the outside brooder at that point with just a lamp on at night if the temperature is under 60.

My girls usually have the start of a crest by 5 weeks, but some of the boys don't show much until 3-5 months.

I always take a double look when people talk about putting their birds outside at 3 weeks of age in April - because it is still WINTER here!! We are now just starting to get highs into the 60's on nice days.

We hit 97 Deg. F yesterday. We start hatching the end of February or early March. We did have a coulpe of freezes and lost two chicks to the cold on those nights. I am glad that we got the hatch done early though as the Pullets will start laying before the days get too short which should ensure a steady supply of pullets eggs through the winter when the hens are molting and resting up for hatching season..
