Cream Legbars

A while back I posted that my hatches were very pullet friendly. Well I spoke to soon. Today was 5 boys two pullets. I should not have opened my mouth.:D

Lo
My CLs are nearly 2 weeks old. They are very healthy and are feathering in nicely, but they are also the most boring chicks I've ever brooded. Most chicks keep me laughing with their antics and zany behavior. These guys? Not so much. Maybe I bought Couch Legbars instead of Cream Legbars by accident. Maybe they will liven up when I move them into a larger brooder. That will happen as soon as I move my ducklings outdoors, and that will occur after I build a new breeding pen and duck house, so it may be a week or so. Aragorn and Faramir Galadriel
Love the names. All my chickens have unusual names also.

One more girl pipped and died. One egg left that's aready pipped and one last egg with no word yet. MAYBE I'll get one more girl?!

Well, on the bright side, you'll have plenty of roos to choose from . . . . scant comfort I know!

Make that 9 boys, 1 girl... one egg with no word I'm guessing it's not going to hatch. And not a light boy in the bunch, all medium to dark. Probably not keeping a single one. Sheesh I hate culling day olds...

Rinda, I have not been able to decide which is harder, culling them at one day of age or after I have been feeding, handling and talking to them for weeks or months.

Optimistically believed it would be a long time till I faced culling -- had one in my very first incubator hatch. Didn't think I could do it. Did it. But I cried.

I read with some amusement the discussion of boring Cl hatchlings. My two crested pullets and three little roos are pretty laid back too. The pullets are now 6 weeks old and the roos are 5 weeks old. The roos seem to develop their combs faster than other breeds but I have one who seems to be on high octane hormones. At 3 weeks his comb was pinking up and by 4 weeks he was growing wattles. This was definitely faster than the other two roos. At 4 weeks, the who the first roo games began in earnest. Today, I was shocked, the roo with the now very red comb and wattles (others do not have much for wattles yet) tried to crow! At 5 weeks old, this little guy wants to crow!

I have a EO (basque) roo that started trying to crow at ~7.5 weeks of age and a Swedish flower hen roo who has started trying to crow at ~9 weeks of age.
