Cream Legbars

the ether will suffocate them. if you ever watch a chick die this way you will turn to chopping the head off. It is the fastest way and you know the chick only has a sec of pain. the lil one i tried with ether suffered for several minutes terribly before i yanked it out and snapped its neck. the ether is a nasty way to die. its not like the movies where you drop in a second. The carbon dioxide way may be a good one, i have not seen a chick die that way. If you want the chick to have the quickest most painless time you chop their heads off. If you are only worried about yourself and want it to be easy for you you drop them in a box or tupperware and walk away as they gasp and flop around trying to suck up as much air as possible that just isnt there.

I was under the impression that ether is an anesthetic and would therefore limit suffering. My chick peeped for maybe 3 or 4 seconds, although it may have been reacting to my putting it into the container. It was then motionless and if it was breathing, I couldn't see it. I would never walk away from an animal suffering or dying, and it did not gasp or flop around -- no discernible motion at all. I only waited longer (with the chick) to be absolutely sure it was gone.

Perhaps it depends on the amount of ether used. I don't know. Nor can I say definitively that it did not suffer. It didn't look like it, but I don't know enough.

Admittedly I was looking for an option that would be easier for me to face than decapitation. And I may use that option in the future. But I would not worry simply about myself and walk away. I don't think anybody here would.

Good advice.

My admonition to my son when we were getting rid of the prairie dog that had taken up in our pasture was "be sure your blow is swift and hard--you don't want to hurt it, you want to kill it" The most humane thing for the animal is sometimes the hardest on human.

After an uncertain journey from Papabrooder (left CA Sat PM and went missing in the USPS system-probably on a dock in the heat baking-and showed up in Denver Tuesday am
hu.gif
) my Cream Legbar eggs that I ordered back in February are now in the incubator.

I had ordered 9 and expected 11 with extras, but because of an ebay auction and broody issues the expected ship date was delayed. He was very, very accommodating and sent lots of extras--lots. He asked if I had other breeds I wanted to get and I said Swedish Flower hens so he sent 29 eggs all together
ep.gif
about half Cream Legbar and Half Swedish Flower Hens. He packed very well, bubble wrapped eggies then double-boxed with padding

Now I know on the uncertain journey, they were perhaps not handled as a package marked 'FRAGILE-Hatching eggs' should have been because the largest of the Cream Legbar eggs had a spiderweb crack and there were 4 others with detached air cells and then 13 others with common-place saddle air cells. So 28 are going in to the incubator with the expectation that those 4 with the detached cells are going to get pulled when they start sweating in about 12 hours. But you never know, so in they go.

I let them set overnight and will not plug in the turner for a few days--I haven't decided how long. I have heard advice anywhere from 2-7 days. Any thoughts on the matter?

My luck with shipped eggs is really poor, but I am hoping with all of the extras he sent that it will make up for the USPS damage. They are due to hatch on my 50th birthday so either I really will have something to celebrate or I will be having a really suck-y birthday. I'll keep y'all posted as the eggs develop....or not.

It is always good to hear stories like this! It is nice to know there are some who go the extra mile to take care of their customers. Looking forward to great birthday present for you. :)

If you didn't toss the spiderweb crack eggs yet, use some wax (I use beeswax because I have it but paraffin wax works, too) to seal over all the cracks and incubate it anyway and maybe it will still hatch!

Sorry about the rough trip through the mail. Crossing my fingers for you that you get a good hatch!

That was great he was able to send you so many extras. I know I always appreciate that, too!

At least you rec'd your eggs! I ordered from a guy in North Carolina - one state away - at the beginning of April and I'm still waiting for my eggs. He said he shipped them but lost the tracking number; they never arrived here. I even checked with my neighbors in hopes that they just went to the wrong address. Nope. I was promised a new batch April 24th after he sold a dozen he had listed on ebay and I'm STILL waiting. After MULTIPLE emails that have been ignored, I'm probably never going to see either eggs or my $$$. Hubby is now PO'd about my buying ANY eggs from online sellers. I am so sick of hearing it every other day and NOT happy.

Oh, man I am really sorry to hear that. Unfortunately with tracking it just tells you where the eggs are but it is not insured and I have had lost shipments even with it anyway. I have to wonder if it slows the whole shipping process down since they have to hand-scan it. I think next time I will ask for no tracking and just get insurance for the value of the eggs. Does seem very sispicious that they 'lost' the tracking number, now doesn't it?

If you bought the eggs off ebay they do have a guarantee where the seller has to make things right if there is a complaint. I had to do that once on a saxophone I bought that was misrepresented. The seller ended up sending me a check for about $300--the cost to have it repaired to what he represented it as. There is a time limit on the claim, thought.

I have also had brilliant luck with buying some stuff online too. I think I would stick with BYCers or ebay folks that have a lot of reviews as a seller--not a buyer!

I can't comment on these chicks since the eggs have not hatched (and may not--they are shipped eggs after all), but I wrote Papa Brooder that I was dismayed he listed eggs on ebay and couldn't fill my prepaid order on time and he really bent over backwards to make me happy--he is a very honorable seller and I have no complaints!

Thanks!
So maybe spider-web should be amended to arroyo or maybe lightening-storm. There is also a detached air cell. I have not thrown it away cuz I am really bad about saving stuff:

I am skeptical that the egg is salvageable given that the crack extends beyond 180 degrees. Any experience with this sort of thing?
