Cream Legbars

I think my second batch of CL eggs are done hatching.

3 males that hatched
1 pullet that pipped and then died before zipping.
and 2 on day 22 still doing nothing(fingers crossed they hatch)

So in total this week out of 12 eggs

I have 6 males all of which I am going grow out(only one the blonde color the other 5 typical CL male chicks) pics to come.
And only 2 pullets(but I am kicking myself now because I sold the 2 pullets with a batch of chicks since they were looking for egg color variety). She wanted a CL male chick too but I opted to not sell any of the CL males(not yet). I sold her a OE male instead.

I guess that gives me more reason to set some more CL eggs soon, so I can get some pullets to grow out for me.

The blonde chick is growing fast he is a little beefcake, hes bigger than the others and is feathering in a little faster than the others.

Thankfully I did let the eggs sit before incubation, but unfortunetly didn't know about not turning for the first three days until after they were in the incubator. Is the not turning for all shipped eggs or just CL?

For all shipped eggs, since they go through a lot of shaking and rough handling.

Good luck on your hatch! I have received a number of eggs through the mail and I have had pretty poor luck in general. I think between the altitude change (I am at 5,000 ft) and the postal hubs they journey through it really scrambles the eggs. If yours didn't have to go through a plane flight to get to you, you will be in much better shape!

I would recommend candling your eggs prior to setting them. I make a note on the shell if the air cell is detached (put a D on the top alongside the weight in grams) and I also draw a line in pencil where the air cell is positioned. I have had a couple of eggs where the aircell is ruptured--you can see many tiny bubbles that easily move around the egg as you turn it--I now pitch these as they invariably start sweating when I place them in the incubator. Candling also will reveal micro-cracks in the shell that may not be visible to the naked eye.

The first few times I set eggs I let them rest then started turning right away also. If you have an auto-turner, they will be more upright and you will probably have a saddle-shaped aircell. If you lay them on their sides, then the aircell will be harder to stabilize.

Don't sweat what you can't change and just keep an eye on things moving forward! They say a 50% hatching rate is good for shipped eggs and I personally am happy with 20%. I guess I have gotten used to disappointment!

I knew about the trouble we have here in Colorado, with shipped eggs coming up to our altitude. Yet, I couldn't pass up some Lemon Blue Cochin eggs. Really, really hoping for a semi good hatch. All your tips are helpful.

I just wanted to share a few photos of our new group of Cream Legbars. They are between 6-11 months old. A huge thank you to Curtis for all of his time and working with our schedule for picking them up.

Congrats! This one is especially charming, I love her inquisitive cocked head. Looks like Curtis set you up with some really pretty pullets and I will look forward to seeing you post as they mature!

Looking ahead, I am incubating them in egg cartons to keep them upright instead of using the incubator devidors. When it comes time for lockdown, would you leave them in the cartons or lay them on their sides?
In other incubation threads I've seen people say they do it both ways, but some feel keeping shipped eggs upright is better.
