Cream Legbars

I wonder how it will look when she's all grown up. I think it was too big to keep her for breeding, and her color looked to dark, but I'm just learning.

I'm right there with you on the learning. Many BYC members will assist with thoughts on her standards. In any case I plan on using my CL girls that don't make the cut for olive/easter egger makers.

thanks DoubleMM, I was thinking of olive eggers but I have so many breeds now I figured I would just try those first. In fact if these girls don't end up worth breeding I will probably just try again next year with a batch of Jill Rees birds. All you breeders can I please get some input on a few of my legbars females that I'm thinking of keeping for breeding. Sorry but this is going to be a lot of pics. Hope you don't mind.

This gal is just over seven weeks. I noticed her hackles coming in before any of the 11 other females I have. Hers I guess were the lightest or at least it appears that way against her dark head. I know the darker head is not desirable so I wasn't going to keep her but I do like her and I wanted to hear what you guys think. Is her crest a good size? Should I avoid breeding CLB with a dark head. How's her chest color? I feel it may be a little dark. We can call this gal number 1 as I will be posting pics of others.

Now some pics of gal number 2. She is the lightest I thought she would be the best because of how light but she is just not impressive. Her crest is small, I think her chest is lacking color, her hackles don't stand out. I'm thinking I would choose gal 1 over her.

@cutipatooti

I think she is looking great. When my pullets were younger I also was thrown off by the darker heads. All my pullets I have hatched this year from my original trio all are similarly dark. I thought they were looking incorrect but I am really liking the look of them over the very light heads my older hens have. I plan to let all my cream pullets fully mature before I decide if the darker heads are a cull point for me. Currently it's not a concern. You might want to consider letting them mature more before culling.

They are still very young to judge but I agree with your choice. I definitely like pullet 1 a little better over pullet 2. Again give them time to mature they still have a lot of changes to go through.
