Cream Legbars

Can you post a link when you get a chance? I have been meaning to comment on it again when I make it to my computer.

Definitely I will.....

I guess since there are:
1. decisions to be made, and
2. the possibility of multiple varieties of Legbar that may eventually be addressed, (i. e. your rose combed, the recessive white ones, possibly some of the original precursor Legbars and this new 'more colorful' variety )


then I will call it 'Alternative Legbar varieties - SOP discussion'.


i Want to do a little background checking with the BYC folks who control it to see if we can get some parameters - since there are a number of Legbar threads -so some of the posts that drift there should end up in other threads - such as CL hybrid thread for example so it has minimal confusion.


Meaning no offence to the Orpington people, When I first saw this I thought it was a Cream Legbar that needed to go to WeightWatchers, , but this variety was once called 'the Legbar colored Orpington' - until the name was changed to Crele Orpington---

If one were to change the type - (and I think it is an example of really good plumage) - add a crest, loose some roundness...nice chicken.....

I will get the new thread set up ASAP and post links to it -- please hold on folks -- Really looking forward to the discussion.

Or maybe just that he will be a good watch dog for predators, or in some way provide you an unexpected benefit.

Im going to a show this morning as a spectator, maybe while I am there If a judge has a free moment I will try to ask a few questions.

That is great!!! -- Looking forward to what you will find out....good luck with it -- the judges generally have such a full plate at a show.

Yesterday I attended the Texas State Fair - 4H kids in the Dallas area had raised CLs as projects and along with a couple of adults - Gary Kemp - who's cockerels won 1st and 2nd BTW - There were 30 CLs entered, and I think 29 cages filled. This was impressive - the largest grouping of CLs that I have seen in a show.....It does make me think that in 5-years there is a good possibility that there can be the number required for a qualifying meet-- if work continues on this breed!!


First place cockerel [ Gary Kemp's] -- he really had 'stage presence' -- and was just at 11 months so he did have that advantage over the ones hatched this spring.

the Club is trying to determine if there is enough interest in the egg contest for the December 6th show near Houston to sponsor an egg contest within that egg contest.... for anyone who is unfamiliar with an egg contest...here are some shots of the one at the Texas State Fair:

If you would be able to make it to the Klein ISD December 6th . - and have interest in submitting an egg or eggs--- send me a PM and I can help the Club's Board of Directors determine if there is interest...(who knows now in October if anyone will even be laying in Dec....but then you have to be prepared in advance for these things - and can't wait until the last second if you want to have a good result -- you know --the old saying about 'presentations' ---->"PPPPPPP" Loosely translated 'proper prior preparation prevents pathetically poor performance') This is an APA show sponsored by FFA - and this event is the very first annual.

BTW - if you know Sam Brush you should thank him for the time and attention he gave to Cream Legbars on behalf of the 4H. ETA - sorry typo in Sam's surname....

I also have to add -- a real tribute to Curtis Hale - the 2014 year was kind of designated as the 'year of showing' -- since for so many it is new territory...I know that Tony Markley and Kestlyn Penley - really blazed the trail right at the end of 2013 for Cream Legbars at shows---but to have an impressive 29-30 Cream Legbars together at one show - I would say is a real tribute to the work that Curtis did to set it up.

I definitely have interest in the egg show. Provided I have hens or pullets laying at that time.


I just got home from the small poultry show here in NH. A lot of great looking birds there. Unfortunately no Legbars were at the show. I got a quick second to speak with a judge as he was very busy, I asked him if they have viewed many legbars at any of the recent shows. And again unfortunately he has never even heard of a Legbar and has never seen them at a show. He does judging at all the large shows here in New England. So that was very disappointing to hear. He said I could bring my Legbars to shows and maybe I misunderstood but I thought he said they wouldn't win anything because they aren't in the APA yet.

Sold of my last 2 boys - Cemanis - in auction on RBA so out of breeding for a bit as I have no more roosters on the property. I wish you all luck. I kept my original gold hen and 2 Rees pullets. A good deal of my birds went local and one gentleman acquired a nice number of girls and guys so I have a place to look to if I ever want to restart but looking to get back into creating and showing my artwork. I did get a Masters in Fine Art to be a 'working' artist and was feeling like I was losing myself with this as a distraction.

On the Legbar front. The Rees birds are in my opinion a waste of time and money. I don't know if they mixed them in with their current birds but the quality is all over the place. I got a pure gold girls and 1 very colorful boy - maybe 1 cream gene. I got light and dark barred and most were undersized when compared to my own breeding stock. It was disappointing as they had the opportunity to really do something really great for the breed but instead just continued the mess the breed was in already if not made it worse as now there's all these new genes to filter through.

I'll be hanging around at times but still in wonder about the amount of time I've gotten back in my life and really have to admit I don't log on here very much at all anymore but since I did keep 8 girls - Marans, Legbars and Bresse I'll have some interest still in the hobby but have to admit there are things, people and attitudes I will not miss. I had an incident happen during my sales that definitely put the stamp on getting out of this for a bit. I'll be lurking...

it isn't surprising that the judge hadn't heard about Legbars yet....they aren't 'household words'...sort of things.

Apology that this particular show is limited to Texas birds and Eggs...but if you check PoultryShowCentral -- maybe there will be a show near you - I guess it would take a very dedicated person - similar to Susan here in Texas to be the underpinnings for the work of an egg show--- but it is a nice thing for people to get into 'showing' IMO. anyone can put an egg in - providing of course it is from their flock......

I will go back and edit that post -- HOWEVER, your interest is noted and important for future consideration.....thanks!

It is a real catch-22 in a way... I think that he kind of meant that you couldn't have any points accumulated for the rankings in APA showing - because the breed isn't recognized by APA... on the other hand... the APA requires showing for a few years prior to the qualifying meet -- so we need to be showing the breed to have a track record prior to the APA qualifying meet. --
A non APA bird can not be on "championship row" I think-- and some shows have a 'backyard chickens' section - not sure exactly if that means pet chickens of no specific breed that they will look over - and that could be a segway for someone getting into accepted breeds as their hobby - OR what -- but the CL you would take would need to be accompanied by the Standard of Perfection - and it would be entered in the English class--- AND...if the judges/staff etc. are told that people are working toward APA acceptance for the breed...then they possibly could be favorably received.

I will look up the exact wording that they are considering...

For some reason the chickens just make me really happy.

I wish you luck Maria. It was very great getting to know you and it was nice having you live so close by. You were very helpful to me in many ways, I always appreciated every bit of information and advice you shared, your opinion on things helped me very much . Hope to hear from you from time to time.
