Cream Legbars

x2

seems like I come in after chicken pickin and say that a lot LOL

how much do they weigh? and how old did you say?

Is the electric cord so that the waterer doesn't freeze?

It just goes to show how bored I get sometimes and am just waiting for someone to post so I can respond LOL

Hey KP!!

If you send me this picture or another one of him, I can put it on the show winners on the Club's website.  This is the same guy in your avatar now right?

Same cockerel, yes :D let me see if I can get a better pic of him posing. I need one of the winning pullet too. I'll try to send them today.

I don't know how much they weigh.

I believe that Marcus is the biggest rooster that I have had.

They were hatched May 1st.

The water fountain has a heated base that turns on about 40 degrees. It keeps the water from freezing. In Western Washington I only need it for about 3 weeks a year. It's nice though so I don't have to haul hot water to all the coops and the horses at 5AM on thee days that I work.

NO Kidding! Such a good invention. It seems like the days the water is frozen in the waterers are the ones that it hurts to go outside to make sure that they have water. :O) -- I think I would almost get one if I had freezes only two days per year....and they also if the water is at 40-degrees-- it must seem like hot chocolate or something when the weather is bitter cold.

They look really nice and they are young. I have one here that is 6# - and hatched End of April -- so I can imagine exactly how old/big yours are - and they are very nice. :O)

I have to say it was interesting watching my CL cockerels tonight. After dark I went out and needed to handle some of my CL hens and pullets to change bands. In both coops I took a hen/pullet off the roost to handle them of course they yelled at me, when I set them down the cockerel in each coop jumped down off the roost and stood in front of the hen to guard her, but neither showed aggression toward me. They seemed to simply be guarding their hen.

I hope they both continue to have a no worry attitude toward me. Currently they know Im there but don't seem to be bothered by my presence and they step out of my way when Im in the chicken yard and they go about their own business.

My third CL who I have been debating on keeping might very well be the opposite, he seems anxious often and he watches me so Im not sure how long he will stay around here. Hes a nice looking boy too, we will see.

I am glad your boys are behaving themselves chicken pickin. My only CL boy is very good. He is still young but so far he hasn't made any aggressive moves toward me. He also gets right out of my way. So crossing fingers.

I have a question for all of you about accommodating your chickens...I have one 8 X 8 coop that I house my layers. I plan to use this coop for some pullet culls. I am in the process of building a 12 X 12 coop that will be split in half (one side will house my Salmon Favorelles) and the other half will have a 6 X 8 space for the breeders and a 4 X 6 space for youngsters. All of the coops have attached fenced runs. I don't think this is going to be enough space!

I don't want 100's of chickens but I am trying to figure out how to do this. My husband is already worried about the multiplication...How does everyone else do it?

As for accommodations. I have that chicken math problem that everyone speaks of. I started with one coop almost 3 years ago and I am now up to 6 coops of various sizes, 2 rabbit hutches used for chickens(broodies or feathered chicks done with heat). A built in wall unit with 3 separate compartments in garage used for various things like brooding, holding roosters waiting to be culled, injured chickens, maybe breeding. And I don't know how many plywood boxes and plastic totes used for brooders lol. Oh and a chicken tractor. Oh boy Im chicken crazy lol.

So the way I do it is I never build big enough and always need to build more lol. I have a chicken village. Works for me but had I known I would love chickens the way I do I would have build much differently to start. Your building plan sounds nice, one building with many areas/options but your right you might need more space

Let's see...chicken village is a pretty good description of what we do too :) but I cull heavily in the Fall. I have a multipurpose 4 x 8 rooster pen next door to his hens' 8x12 pen. They are not really big enough for breeding yet, but he will get to visit once or twice a week during show season. There are plans to build a second set of these. I have another 8x12 pen for a hen house, and a 6x6 pen for roosters. I also have removable panels that create a run for the boys, but is currently bring used as freezer camp. Then there is the kids' bantam pen too...all in all there are only 24 birds and 5 are marked for butchering. We also have various small coops for brooding, growing out, etc.

I hope you figure out a system that works for you!
