Cream Legbars

0Hi Vicki - congratulations on your hatch. IMO all your chicks are normal - and they sure are cute. Punnett himself stated that Legbar chick down varies, (he pictured gold -- later Pease stated that the chick down on Cream Legbars was 'as the gold' -- ) Take a look: (BTW Punnett never came up with an explanation of why the down colors vary.


Had a hatch myself on the 19th and 21st. Only the boys are still here and they look like the males pictured in the top row. Middle chick in plate is male and bottom two are female.

I hatched these yesterday from eggs bought here on 1 of the auction threads. I got 4 boys and 2 girls out of he 10 eggs so far.

They all have similar coloring except this one. Is this a normal col for a CCL?

Beautiful chicks you got there. All have great markings.

To me the last male you posted does look a little "different" with black/white coloration. But as @ChicKat mentioned males can come in a variety of down shades.

I hope you post more pics of your chicks as they mature.

How did your hatch go? How many males vs females? I don't recall pics, did you post?

My CL batch of egg is due to hatch in 6 days YAY!

Whoo HOO - good luck -- I bet they will ALL hatch and you will have a LOT of chicks.

I kind of recall you were debating about putting that last couple of eggs IN.
I think that the turner broke on one of my incubators - and I only got 1 female from that -- 4 eggs made it to lockdown. The other incubator had 3 girls and the two boys. - 2 never pipped. I think I have been running incubators too humid. Then I left town for a week in Portland OR. Just got back and catching up with things around here. A lovely lady and her husband came up and took home all females... I did photo the two boys after returning. Quite different shades of Cream Legbar:

Left one was lighter a week ago -- and as you know as the barring grows in - they will look just alike in about 2-weeks I predict.

Same here, I'm aiming to handle the eggs less - but I'm not sure it will have an effect -- except for things like when I hit one on the side of the incubator and cracked it -- or saw a star-crack in the egg and tried to patch with wax - which once long ago got me a hatch.

This time I had an early hatch and when I opened the little incubator to remove her, she knocked an egg out -- which went rolling and I caught before it smashed on the floor. the shell kind of shattered (it had already pipped)--- and there was a spot of blood on the membrane. I left it until the membrane started to shrink wrap and over a couple of hours with moist hot paper towels, opening the membrane etc. it eventually hatched to be a successful chick.

I do have a 'no helping out' rule-- but the chick would have been fine if the egg hadn't rolled out of the incubator and off the counter to be caught in mid air.... -- and I couldn't just watch her shrink-wrap to death due to that unlucky circumstance. Seems like there is always something.

Thank you for the info. So they should look the same at maturity then? Kind of creepy looking at those dead chicks, but it shows the variation well.

I also have a no helping out rule. I have tried it in the past to help and it just doesn't pan out well. I hate to see a chick pip and not hatch but I much prefer natural selection, it means stronger chicks and a stronger flock.

They do look so different and they are super cute. I think you are correct in just a few weeks you will barely be able to tell them apart.

It would be so nice if down color would give us a small glimpse as to how they will feather out as adults. But no they like to keep everyone guessing lol.

Enjoyed seeing and reading about the Cream Legbars, awesome breed. Too high for me but enjoyed learning of them.
