Cream Legbars

You should do a search of Cream Legbars on Spokane's craigslist we have 4 - 5 ads at any given time. The Legbar is in full force at any given time. They go for $25.00 a pullet.

There is a mixture of quality Walt. FMP,has the best I have seen - besides FMP. His are not included in the Craigslist Count. However they are here in the area.

There are some listed on the "southside" that look a bit like the 2014 Champion in color and have a good type. I have talked to this person they got their flock from a breeder in Seattle.

The rest tend to have the "Golder" level of cream, and look like what I now consider to be your typical backyard "Cream Legbar". They tend to have short backs and odd tails, and there is the whole color thing again. I always ask for adult pictures, mainly to see "who has what". ;)

A friend of mine has 3 Cream Legbars - Pullets or maybe just turned hens - all from the same hatch, and they are tag-teaming broody eggs...like it is shift work and they all have a certain time to be on the eggs. What will they think of next?
I just had two broody's share the eggs, they also "took turns". Right after the hatch they kind of fought over the chicks, now the chicks are about 2.5 weeks old, one mom is the leader and the other stays behind, never letting any stragglers get lost. It is super cute and it has been very effective. My backyard can be dangerous, all the chicks are surviving.

I really need a good Roo with a straight comb. Mine are terrible - 2 have 90 degree bends in them and one is a zig zag. Is anyone successfully breeding them with straight combs?

If possible, starting with a Roo that has a small crest and straight comb seems to be easier than working with a crazy combed Roo and a small combed hen.

My foundation rooster has a great comb and small crest, and while I see a variety of comb sizes in his offspring (as a result of different hens and varied combs) the combs are relatively straight with no flop or zig-zag. I think several other breeders also have good combs in their flocks.

From a different perspective, and a small sample, I hatched 3 cockerels from someone else's breeding program and saw a 2 to 1 result. The parent rooster had a very large floppy and zig-zag comb (and great crest), and one of the hens had a very small neat comb and normal crest. Two of the cockerel offspring had the most awful flopped/zig-zag combs that truly covered one eye; coincidentally they were mirror images of each other - one flopped left, one flopped right.

The third cockerel has a strong straight comb with a small wobble at the back. He now has hens with some nice neat combs, so I'll be looking for straighter combs in his offspring. Meanwhile his sisters have fabulous bouffant crests, and small floppy combs, so I plan to match them up with a rooster with a very straight comb and small crest and see what happens.

ugghhh, I've had terrible luck with more than one broody hen in a space. They make a mess of the eggs rather than share anything. It would be so much easier to share space instead of setting up separate brooding areas with food and water…I've tried moving them to a shared brooding coop with it's own secure run, but that wasn't big enough?... Reminds me of when I had the kids in the car and one of my boys would say "but he's breathing my air"!
