Cream Legbars

Sometimes it is good for the male to see the females, but not get to them for about a week. A cage within a cage works.

thankyou, i did that on the initial introduction. I fear a he was kept with another roster from the place i bought him, and had his comb pecked that he was knocked down the pecking order...

My cl roo isnt mating with the hens?! No action no fertile eggs tested in incubator... Any suggestions? Can you get a dud?

Are the hens being co-operative?
I find the Legbar hens only let a new boy mate them when they know them for a while. That said the legbar boys I have kept are always gentlemen (to the hens and people) and seem to be less aggressive maters. I virtually never see them mate. Eggs are still fertile.

The newest additions only 3 hatched out of 14 eggs 7 made it to lockdown

Shows the interesting color variations

Looks like 1 girl and 2 boys

So sweet! I love that little boy on the right...

X2 - My main Legbar understands if a hen 'has a headache' -- my Isbar is so overly conscientious that he wore the feathers off some of the Isbars -- he is always on patrol for everything that flies over head, every hint of a predator, every morsel a hen may want, everything -- he is a worry wart. (but gorgeous and sweet) -- My Legbars except 1 young one - are total gentlemen and protect their hens (too much sometimes maybe?) -- I wish ALL roosters were so easy on hens!

hens are all getting along. But arent being cooperative, because he aint trying to mate.... ill call my local hen place and see if the other legbar is still there. He should have fertiliser some eggs by now. This is the 2nd month of being in with the hens.

Those two were the same rooster at different ages

yes on the genetics. I'm still on the fence about wether it was a melanin thing or the first hint of proper barring in a pullet ( since at that time most of my girls were smoother in color, lacking visual barring), but
I culled that line. I decided to make a new pairing and now have a grand daughter of Grey with Cider. I'll look into barring pics but need to go to bed.

Thanks =) No more late night posts for me! …maybe... it seems like that's when everything calms down, right?
Grey sure looked different in the two pics, did his barring come in darker? I haven't seen that happen?

I never get tired of looking at Jack =)

Interesting that you thought the pullet you didn't keep might be the beginning of improved barring…note to self...
