I got to meet KPenley!!!

And now I have the most beautiful little cockerel that I named "Andy" in honor of his home town. I guess we'll have to call him Anderson when he's a big important grown up rooster.

K, he slept on my lap all the way home.

I put him in his own coop in my garage, which I keep cooled down with fans. And picked out a friend for him so he would have a roommate and not be lonely - a little EE pullet his age - and I think they're going to get a suite mate today. He has such a nice personality. He's a little shy but curious. And such a beautiful straight comb and coloring!! He is a happy boy! I'll try to get a picture of him today.

I was looking at Cream legbar boy I kept and Im not seeing much sign of the wry tail issue anymore. But his comb and wattles are HUGE. I have another little guy, roughly 2 months now, and Im considering possibly holding off putting my boy with the girls till this one comes along and I can compare. But my current boy is about 22 weeks now. When I picked between the two the comb and wattles were not this huge. Is there something that happens at maturity in this breed that sets the Comb and wattles off on a growth spurt?

Has anyone else noticed late development in comb and wattles in these birds. Im just a little leery of holding off and the second is no better.

Im going to probably switch lines back to my original females line and try hatching out some more of her line. Or maybe Ill just go looking for some started birds. (My hatch results have been terrible)

Idk about other peoples Legbars but all of my lines have ALWAYS had huge combs.

I see a range of combs/wattles. It helps if the hen has a small less floppy comb. However, cockerels as a result of the same pairing, may have different attributes, including combs & wattles.
It really helps if the rooster and hen both have straight and small combs to start out with, otherwise it takes a few generations to eliminate the "overgrowth". I haven't seen any correlation to weather, time of year, or housing with specific gender.

was just thinking about you today, and wondering about your progress. Looks like the choices that you made were good ones, doesn't it. Particularly I like the darker breast & lighter hackles combination on the first guy and he looks like his comb is really straight!.

Thanks!!! Those were the primary reasons I picked him. I also like the small amount of chestnut and cream saddle feathers on him. He was the best of the bunch. I still have some things I want to work on, but I'm quite happy with my choices so far.

All that green looks like dollar signs, as California is so dry and brown from the drought. We've given up the lawn, hoping we don't lose too many trees.

It is nice to see everyone's pictures! I have been so busy with summer business that I haven't had time to post. I had some disappointing hatches on shipped eggs. I am not sure why, I decided to replace the heating unit in my incubator just in case. It has slowed my flock building considerably and I am trying to decide what I want to do next.

I hatched 8 from a pairing from my flock about 13 weeks ago. I ended up with 2 pullets and 5 cockerels. I will try to post some pics today if possible. Neither of the pullets are worth keeping and some of the boys have some redeeming qualities. I have another 9 eggs of my own under a broody right now. I am hopeful I will end up with at least a couple of pullets that I can use.

It is nice to see everyone's pictures!

I am closing on my home in Oklahoma today. I am very excited. I dropped all of our Juveniles off at our Bishop's home 2 months ago and haven't seen them since. Bishop Hovey told me on Sunday that they lost two to predators this week (along with one of their Hybrid pullets in the grow out pen). He said that they lost one of the Splash Breda and one of the Legbars with Cream Color. Well, we have lost two Legbars from the group now and both of them have been Cream. I hope that means that we have lots of cream (they were to young to get a good read on the color when they were dropped off). We breed three Cream Cockerels and 9 gold hens. Five of the hens were known carriers for cream. The other four could be split for cream of complete for gold. We will be excited to get out chickens back and be able to start taking some photos of our own.

Oh....and after 7 weeks we ran out of kitchen eggs that we brought from Texas when we made the move to Okie-land. We will be excited for that first pullet egg at the end of the summer too. The eggs we had last night were cooked about perfect, but the store bought eggs just didn't taste the same as our free range eggs do.

Some pics of the 13 wk olds. I ended up with two without a crest, one pullet and one cockerel. All the rest have small crests. All are from the same pairing. There are going to be a lot of pictures.
The crestless pullet: She seems quite gold.


The pullet I kept: I am not sure what to think of her coloring. Quite strange and her breast color is a mess. Any thoughts on why she looks like this?


The boys. They all look very similar. Some with smaller combs and some with large. Lots of chestnut. I am going to keep two of the ones with the smaller combs and decent earlobes for a while and see how they turn out:
