Cream Legbars

I suppose you didn't have chickens when you traveled that much! Hope you enjoy being settled now =)
That's the thing about chickens, it is too difficult to travel much with having them. Glad it was all out of my system those years. - Yep I love being settled and hate leaving. Have you heard about those 'stress-cations' where you spend the vacation wondering how you animals are faring ?

Chickens are the best if you are well grounded...(or have some to take care of them while you are gone.)

I got a pullet egg today. She is 23weeks 5days. Its kind of a blue green, I cant tell lol. Looks bluer in the pic than I think it is, I see a green tint, my DD sees blue...

So the more I see it, the more I like that color. I had thought that the lower eggs were colored, but you said the photo made the egg look a little darker, so I thought perhaps they were white and there was a color factor in the photo. That is one pretty egg shell for certain.!! -- I suppose as she grows, and the eggs get larger the color will be diffused throughout a larger shell....

I took a few pics of the pullet egg after I accidentally dropped it

I have a seriously bad habit of doing egg "photo shots" lol and often at least one egg falls to its death, some times more.

This is the egg after I pulled the membrane out of the inside. The inside definitely bluer than the exterior. I can now see the green hue better.

This is a moment before I dropped the egg, trying to get a pic showing its pullet size.

Egg pictures are hard as the colors often don't show true. I do believe it is bluer than my other eggs, though it definitely does still have a green tint.

Nice photos! good details.

(I drop them and break 'em when I candle -- that is way worse.)

Once I was taking a chick out of the incubator so she didn't terrorize the other eggs -- she kicked an egg just as I picked her up -- it rolled out of the incubator, off the counter, miraculously I caught it in mid air -- and it kind of shattered. -- in my hand. Somehow that egg was able to kind of 'hatch' -- she didn't have anything solid to push against by that time...most of her membrane remained intact and she didn't loose too much blood from her pre-hatch flight. But it could have gone the other way. fragile.

In this case - we got to see the inside! looks true blue.

Hope to see pics when your Wh. Am's reach POL. When I first got CL's I had to adjust my expectations to the range of blues that they tend to lay, and now I really enjoy them all because there is a little variety.

I'm in Palos Verdes, sounds like you enjoyed coastal living too. Are you still coastal in Washington or more inland? How's the weather in your area? We have some friends that recently moved from Texas to Washington because they prefer cool, cloudy weather (maybe not smokey…) and were trying to get away from the heat and humidity. @ChicKat also spent some time in SoCal, but she's in Texas now =)

Yes, we're still coastal. We love the water but we were tired of the crowds, heat and high prices. We LOVE it here. We're in a small town called Anacortes which is on a small island (about the size of our last town of Oceanside, incidentally - but roughly 16,000 people vs 160,000+ in Oside in the same geographical size area). Our town is the gateway to the San Juan Islands and there is a lot of outdoor stuff to do here as well as good schools, nice people, good restaurants and an affinity for the arts. It's not well known in WA state, let alone outside of it, that there is a banana belt of sorts created by the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains - and Anacortes is in this belt. So the area we are in gets less rain than Seattle. My brother is in Snohomish, about an hour south and slightly east and he gets close to 50" of rain a year and we get just under 30". Overall, we get the seasons but mildly compared to other parts of the country and even Eastern WA. We just love it here.

@ChicKat
I'm not sure when you were at Disneyland but my Aunt and Uncle met there, probably early 70's, and they worked with my later step-mom. I grew up about 15 minutes from there (without traffic ;). There are many things to love about CA and I spent about 40 years there but I'm not missing all the crowds. Sounds like you had some exciting adventures with all that traveling!

I'm surprised you have so many chickens. An employee at Shakey's BP said BP City doesn't allow them or she would have them. You must be in County rather than City section like we are.
Wes's is closer to you than us. We're right in between San Dimas Feed and Wes's so we have a choice but I prefer SD for supplies. Wes's chicks aren't Marek's vaccinated so don't think I'll buy chicks from him again. My Dom pullet from him had a sudden seizure and died. The Privett chicks he orders are nice quality but he doesn't order them vaccinated. My neighbor used to pick up her chicken supplies in Whittier/La Habra - probably Kruse Feed?

I stop at Pet Palace in Covina for a quick pickup of nesting straw or some emergency bird seed but they are too small to carry a wide variety of supplies or organic. In Spring they have RIR and BR chicks for sale. Like most nice small shop owners they will order anything I want but I don't feel like making one trip to order and a 2nd trip to pickup.

I have never bought from Russell. I read the BYC thread on Chickens Galore which is how I learned about him and the majority of reviews were favourable and so were the yelp reviews - there's always one or two unfavourable reviews but mostly good ones. I wonder if Russell does Marek's vaccinations in the first 48 hrs after hatch which is what's recommended. I read one review that said they returned to have their birds vaccinated so I couldn't figure why they had to return since the chicks have to be vaccinated preferably at day-old.

A CL and Barnie sound nice. I had a smooth-legged Cuckoo Maran and she was nasty to my other chickens and had to re-home her but she did lay some fertile eggs which our neighbor hatched under a broody - 3 baby pullets and 2 feather-legged Cuckoo cockerels. Our two Leghorns got aggressive toward our Silkies and the gentle Ameraucana so had to re-home the Legs too (one was White and one was a rare Buff) - so sad because they were great layers. In all my farm days and backyard chickeneering I have never had a better white egg layer than White Legs but they are not touchy-feely pets like a Silkie and sometimes will turn bullies toward gentle breeds.

Since I never spoke with Russell I have no idea where his stock comes from but most customers appear happy with his birds. If you go back to get more birds from him can you let me know if he breeds Dominiques?

Smiles
I asked him if they were vaccinated and he said he wasn't sure.. It was too late to order the vaccine online by then since they were too old

My area code is 91706 and I know it's bad.. I'm probably going to get flamed but when I checked online it said I can only have 5 chickens
although my BOTH my neighbors that have lived here for over 30 years have about 30 each.
hu.gif

I started with 5 and then they came over asking me why I didn't buy more. I told them about the 5 max limit and they laughed saying they've lived here for years plus we have many people in my neighborhood that have over 5 chickens, but they don't speak English.
As long as they're all hens - I should be fine.
What's sad about this area is that there are many strays.. and the shelter is overflowing.
It's so bad that I've called animal control on this one house two streets over that keeps a full grown Light Sussex in a bird cage about three feet tall
and 2 feet wide by 2 feet tall.. The poor thing can barely move around. There is no roost and the floor is made of wires. That poor
chicken has never touched grass. It's been a month and when I call back animal control says they are too busy to come?
I ended up asking the owners to sell her to me for $40.. it got up to $60 but they said no and didn't speak English even though I had the cash out while I was pointing to her.

There is another dog with a huge tumor on it's neck that I've also called in but once again animal control has been too busy to come.

On Craigslist, it says his chicks are vaccinated but on Yelp some people say that he only vaccinates some? I've been very careful with biosecurity.
I don't let my neighbors that own chickens into my back yard but they do look at them through the glass door in my room.
Is it a risk if my neighbors have chickens on both ends next to my house? We have 6 foot walls separating both sides and theirs are kept in a coop with run while mine free range.

I'll check tomorrow and let you know since he is holding a Serama Show at his place!

Quick question - for Cream Legbars, would you rather go with the Jill Rees line or Curtis Hale line?

Thank you!

That's an interesting question, I've never heard it put that way before =)

It sounds like you have a soft spot for animals, that was a nice try to get the Lt. Sussex out of the cage, so many sad stories. If you listen to the KNX radio show "ask the Mayor" on Thursdays, Garcetti was just talking about increased funding to prevent animal cruelty. I don't know if there is a way to follow up with that (without getting yourself in hot water).

If you are interested in getting answers to biosecurity questions, there's a contact at the UC Davis Extension office who is coordinating outreach to backyard poultry people in California. They also have a questionnaire on the message boards of the Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts (LAUCE) meet ups group. If you need help with any of these contacts, send me a pm so I don't take up too much space on this thread - unless of course anyone else from California is interested.

Thanks for the geographical info. I'll look that up!

I actually just joined that group yesterday! I will definitely check that out, thank you!

And yes, I have a major soft spot for animals! Always have and always will..
Since living here, I've picked up 22 strays in four years. Some had microchips so I would drop them off back with their families, others I fostered until someone was willing to adopt them.
There is a huge problem with people having too many animals here then abandoning them or not having adequate fencing to keep them contained to their property.
I guess I am also adding to the problem with my many chickens but I'm keeping them forever so it doesn't really count, right?

My neighbors have been eyeing my two Easter Egger's and Australorp so I am going to give them to her since she has a disability and cannot drive anymore.

I am asking the Jill Rees vs. Curtis Hale question regarding Cream Legbars because this Sunday I will be driving three hours towards San Diego to pick up a Lavender Orpington,
an Isbar, a Fremch Lavender Marans and a Cream Legbar. The Isbar, LFM, and CL will be from Secret Hills Ranch. They have both lines and asked me to pick one so of course I came here so you all can advise me since there's nobody I trust more on the matter than all of you.

Straight from Secret Hills Ranch:
We are very proud to have Cream Legbars from the first Greenfire Farms Import, Curtis Hale XL Egg Bloodlines, Cream Legbar Club Western Region Director Kristin Rye and from Greenfire Farms Import From England of Championship Jill Rees Cream Leg Bars.

We have two groups of Cream Leg Bars that are completely unrelated bloodlines. The first grouping is a Jill Rees Rooster from Imported Bloodlines with several SHR Hens. The second is a Curtis Hale Bloodlines Rooster known for very large egg size being bred to SHR Hens. Please specify if you would like birds from our Jill Rees or Curtis Hale Bloodlines. Thanks!

What do you guys think?
