Thanks, ChicKat. Got the results of Angel's necropsy today. She apparently had an intestinal blockage with renal gout likely secondary to the lack of fluids as a result of the intestinal blockage. There was apparently no grit in her gizzard, which is odd since she had constant access to grit. She also did not have a normal formed ovary, so I guess she would have never lain any eggs, although she was a pet, so that doesn't matter. The blockage was plant material, so I now feel guilty for feeding greens and fruit. Maybe if she had only eaten pellets she would have not gotten blocked. I guess we do the best we can, but in hindsight, I should have trusted my gut and realized there was something wrong sooner. We do miss her, but if the breed as a whole is as curious and fun as she was, I will certainly be looking for another CL in the future.

with a diagnosis like that, I would surmise that there isn't really anything that you could have done. Thanks for sharing the information. Sorry you lost her.

At what age will I start seeing the crest? I have chicks a little over a week old.

I started seeing tuffs on the girls about 2 weeks. When I took their 3 week pics they all had something going, 1 or 2 are wild,lol.

Ditto - I saw the barest of tufts (when I looked hard) at 2 weeks, but they were definitely visible by 3 weeks in all of mine. Here's Paula at 4 weeks. Cute little punk hairdo...

My 2 week olds chicks all had crests when I bought them. The newborns started getting their crest at about 2 weeks. You'll see little stray feathers start sticking up, some more than others. They are very cute!

Here are my 2 little cockerels. The first one is almost 8 wks old.



This one is almost 6 wks old.

^ Surprisingly, although she had a bit of a reddish tint to her chick fluff, the feathers on her wings are developing a silver/gray/creamish.
I expressed a bit of my concern in previous posts, but am now put to ease! I also just love her quirky little baby crest! It's just so adorbs!

I will say that even though they are chicks, Eden (Rees) is much more tame and does not object to be picked up. Khaleesi on the other tame is a wild card and sometimes, I'll find her perched on one side of the box which is 15 inches high. I've now added bird netting on top so she doesn't escape!

She's adorable. It's starting to get cool here in Louisiana in the mornings so I'm glad mine are finally feathered in. But I love the "downy" look they have as chicks.

Can't wait to see the little tuffs. These are still the quietest chicks I have ever had. They are very confident. Up on a twelve inch high roost. Flying.... my BCM, Ameraucanas were not like this at all.

Cool here in Florida too! They do sort of go thru an ugly duckling stage don't they...... but beautiful to us! She is so cute.
