Cream Legbars

Hi I'm desperately looking for auto-sexing chickens the produce mint green eggs. I read the cream legbars do, but have been so,far unsuccessful in my attempt tp secure hatching eggs. Thus I'm putting it out there that I want them and will pay for them 12 eggs come this March. Below is the color I want.

Several who have Rees line CLs have greener eggs. You may want to look at Greenfire Farms offereings. Most folks who have CLs want bluer eggs.....

I'm also wondering if anyone had info on CLs from Papa's Poultry. There's a person on my local-ish chicken group that was asking for CL advice and he was thinking of getting them from there.

Papa's Poultry is popular on the Northern California thread. You might ask there if you need more information. Otherwise, I think he has a good reputation in general.

Maybe byc member Fire ant Farm got hers from there--- I know that she got some from a hatchery-- not sure which one. She has some really good egg production going on ! perhaps you could PM her?

I think that MyPetChicken has CLs as well. You are smart to start looking early -- because usually they do sell out pretty fast. Good luck!

I got my CLs from My Pet Chicken - best I can tell they were direct shipped from Meyer. Very good production so far (hatched in late April/early May), mostly lovely mint green eggs with a hint of blue, though occasionally more blue - it seems to go back and forth a bit. I am very impressed with them.

Thanks, ChicKat! I'm still in love with Marzipan! People on UT groups all seem to say that their CLs aren't friendly and then they get rid of them for personality and egg size/color disappointment but my gal from you is such a doll! She's so curious and friendly!

So glad that she is working out for you. I have one CL who is particularly human oriented -- and quite friendly-- and my Isbars along with her are the ones that come running over to me first. She has two siblings - but from a different hatch that are a bit more flighty -- so I think that there is a range of 'personalities' --- Marzipan probably likes you because you raised her well. ;O)

There you go! -- and people are just now thinking about their spring chickens and I see that the availability of both Myers and MPC is already beginning to be 'limited' -- Maybe 2016 will be a good year for demand in the CL world.

Sounds like that could be an option for Dorthia too who is looking for green egg-layers.

Given "Rees fever", depending on what you were looking for, you may wish to check with them on the source - I got mine last year, before the Rees line became so popular, and they are not Rees line (which I prefer, personally). But it could be that to satisfy demand they have added that line, so may be worth a phone call depending on what you're wanting. It'll be more of a roll of the dice than getting from someone who can really specify background and lines, but that may be fine depending on what your goals are. I am beyond thankful that so many are applying themselves to continued breeding and improvement of the breed here in the US, as I don't personally have the ability or room to hatch/grow/cull sufficient numbers to apply myself to it myself. That being said, I'll be doing my best to maintain and improve what I have and not to propagate significantly negative qualities (e.g., auto sexing issues) even in my own backyard.

I am DELIGHTED with my CLs as a backyard bird. They are good foragers, somewhat thrifty, and I get good production of pretty light green eggs (occasionally more blue). They're also sweet - they follow me around. (Of course, I'm also the lady with the food, though I rarely treat them.) I have a really fantastic cockerel from ChicKat, and will be hatching (for my own flock) this spring.

I agree Matt. Give it time. From what I've read through all of these threads, comb isn't everything and I would personally consider other characteristics to be higher on my list to breed for and improve before comb. It's not to say it's not important at all, but if that rooster is better in body type I'd be keeping him. I like big bodied birds that can provide both ends in the chicken world. I have an upcoming Speckled Sussex rooster that I kept marked from the time he was young. I noticed he had a better tail set and while not the largest cockerel, he was far better marked, much less excess white feathers. I pulled him last minute from my butcher cage and I don't regret it. He's coming towards a year and he has grown considerably. He's a good sized bird taking note of, something months back that made him seem average in that department.

Sometimes too we have to work with what we have. My Andalusian rooster is an example of that, but then I know what his parents were. His points in his comb is way more than the sop calls for, but I have him over 5-6 pointed hens. 5 is called for in the standard.

Ironically, Tim's eggs were sky blue. I wouldn't have considered them green. The other eggs I'm hatching out right now, the Rees line eggs, also blue and no mistaking them for green or green tones. However the Line C hen's eggs. A touch of almost green to them. Still blue though in some of them. Just some food for thought. I'd do some shopping, I'm sure the egg shade you seek can be found or close to it.

These are Black Walnut Farm's eggs. I take no credit for their photo, but nothing shows the shade difference more clear than this. The majority of my eggs were the far right shade. I would personally call that green?



Update: 4 pullets out I believe. I'm waiting for them to fluff up. None look "yellow" to me, unless their line isn't as easy to figure out.

My Ameraucanas are laying nice blue eggs. I will like my Jill Rees CL mint green eggs for variety.

I got mine from Jeff(Papa's Poultry). He is very good. He ships on time and usually sends extras. I ordered 6 CL and he sent me 2 extra Rhodebars who are rather nice. I was pleased with my birds. And have ordered more eggs in Feb. He has at least 3 pens of Cream Legbars. So getting unrelated birds is not difficult. He also carries the Rees line . He is working on bringing out the cream in the birds. So if this is want you want he would be a good choice.
