Cream Legbars

Holy cow! I had a chick with a chunk of brain coming out the top one on a batch of shaken up shipped eggs but nothing like that! And it is standing up?

I found this in the incubator . No skull . Legbar mix . I doubt it will live exposed like that . Vaulted skulls often have very little bone at first . First time I have had this happen .

What are you planning to do with the chick? Wait and see if the scalp grows over or cull or ??? Deformities are so sad to deal with

This cockerel has the biggest crest. The comb started out in the center but has since veered off course. Perhaps it will right itself given time! There is still crest on both sides of the comb

I'm fairly new to CCLs. Had 5 last spring and lost 4 of them to a dog. This spring I got 5 more. 4 pullets from California (Papa's Poultry), and one cockerel from a friend.

What are you talking about when you refer to the "crest" on both sides of the comb? I'm trying to learn what to look for in breeding standards.

Often times it can be hard to get a large crest AND a straight comb on the same rooster. Usually to get a straight comb, you have a single copy of the cresting gene, making a smaller crest. If you only have one copy of the cresting gene, you run the risk of breeding birds that have no crest in later generations. If you get a large crest, oftentimes the comb tends to veer to one side and the crest to the other as they compete for headspace. If you get a large crest and a straight comb, this is super exciting for me.

OK, so I have about 15 cockerels to choose from right now. They're all about 10 weeks old roughly. I'd like to start to narrow them down a bit and take some to swaps to unload a few. What are some things I can look for to narrow down my selections? I know fuzzy barring is one. I have one or two with very crisp barring that I'm excited about but also 1 or 2 that have very fizzy barring. What else should I look for?

Select the ones that most closely match the SOP (standard of perfection).
Is the "crest" the off white coloring in the comb?
You may want to take a look at this breed guide:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GCI_f69Hd5P5w5m7GGUTCwH2Os6iWys9KqKHf2bJnk/edit

There is a section where all the items on the proposed standard of perfection are walked through one-by-one and a segment of the chicken accompanies the part of the anatomy that is being referenced.

For example - the crest is a tuft of feathers immediately behind the comb... (on males) and behind and surrounding on females.
Crest: Small, well back from the eyes with narrow feathers falling off the back of the head to below the blade of the comb.
