Cream Legbars

Quote: I think it's not just about frostbite...they act really miserable at a higher temp than their flock mates! -10 this morning, headed outside with hot meals.

What do you mean when you saw
Your rooster lost his Comb?
Does it mean his blood flow stopped from cold weather and
It just fell off or is it its just badly frost bitten?
The reason I am asking is because I am in Ireland and we don't
Get extremely cold weather,
Thank you
Fionn.

Oh I wasn't expecting that.
They actually fall off!
Thankfully if won't affect their chicks but
You can show him.
I hope this dosnt happen to anybody else's roosters.
Do you have a picture of a rooster like this?
Thank you and goodluck,
Fionn.

I will show you a picture if I remember to take one tomorrow. My "prize" white I was so proud of is now nothing but breeding stock. His head is actually bloody. black and losing the tips, in a few weeks it will all just fall off. It is so sad. 30 below will do that.

On the Facebook chicken vet corner where only vets are allowed to answer questions a lady posted a photo of a roo with frostbite wattles and every vet had a spaz about how he needed trip to vet to have them trimmed and some antibiotics and laser work
I owe my vet over two grand for a dog who died I can't ask him to let me add on treatment for a chicken which all the vets here view as disposable livestock (and not that I want my bill any larger)
But I was made feel bad because my roo is not going to get vet care

Most of us don't use a vet at all for our poultry. At least that's the impression I get. Just coat it in vaseline, every day if need be, and how for the best. The damaged part will fall off on its own either during winter or once spring arrives.
