Cream Legbars?

I've been reading about them latley and getting very curious as to if anyone still actually breeds them. Or if how they were originally created? I know they are a cross of brown leghorn to barred rock with some araucana blood on one side or both.

I know that they are a British creation and they are still pretty common over there. If you google them there is a whole site about them that tells you how to make them and all that. I would love to have some here in the US, I dont think there are any yet.

Yes they are common over there and maybe NZ also?

It is possible to recreate the bird using what's available here.. although the hardest part will be getting a single combed blue/green egg layer(Legbars are single combed) as the O gene is very closely linked to pea comb. This is the reason this season I am actively breeding my single combed blue and green eggers.. to make sure they aren't lost here.

AFAIK what's needed is wild type(black breasted red) plus sex linked barring and the cream gene for the autosexing color.

I've heard of a few rare breeders being here in the US. Thanks also for the tip. I have the building blocks for them. For bantams at least. I have standard barred rocks and brown leghorns and true araucana bantams.

The araucanas in either the UK or AUS have crests which is why they have them.

ok so I would need a British standard araucana to get the legbars.

Question is though what araucana colors went into the mix? I'm thinking possibly breeding BB red ara to brown leghorn to produce one side and possibly breeding for a barred arau and breed that to barred rock. This is looking to be quite a challenging breeding project but sounds fun at the same time.

Legbars are supposed to have white earlobes, right? If so why not use barred leghorns instead of barred rocks with a barred araucana. That way you wouldnt have to worry about the brown eggs from the barred rock effecting the blue eggs. Sounds like a good idea with the BBR araucanas and LB leghorns. If you start this year with the first crosses and keep the right offspring this year they will be ready to breed next year. It would be nice if you could have 2 or 3 pens to work with for a larger gene pool. If you make smooth headed legbars you could call them American legbars, it would be like American and French marans.

That is a good idea with the barred leghorns. Though barred rocks went into the mix for original cream legbars and I think it was partial the barred factor and also to beef the breed up a little. Unless the araucana blood would do that then I would go for the barred leghorn. American legbar I like the sound of it.
