Creative nests?

I would have thought the lack of front perches and narrowness would deter but the hens in this picture seem to think otherwise...
Ted, I'm not sure what is going on there. I can't see any reinforcing steel at the cuts and those tires look pretty wide, wide enough for two hens to share one. I don't think those are regular car or truck tires. Maybe some type of balloon tire for lightweight equipment for sand or soft ground.

You read on here all kinds of things that you have to have or that won't work or what is best. The chickens obviously don't read that stuff. They certainly don't follow our rules.

We see all kinds of cute coops, runs, and sometimes nests on here. Some really cute coops. That's not my idea of art but it could be for someone. Or maybe they are just into recycling. Maybe they are trying to get a photo in some farm or homestead magazine. No idea. It obviously caught your eye and several others. Mine too.

I don't think that is photoshopped, I'm often suspicious about stuff like that. I'm generally wiling to believe my eyes rather than someone over the internet or even in person tells me. So in spite of what you read on here that they have to have perches or ramps, well maybe not.

@Ridgerunner

As @aart pointed out how they are mounted is a question given cement block construction. Possible certainly but...

More suspicious is the height to which they are stacked; if they are 12" tires they go 6' at least. Not common for nest boxes.

Placement of the hens does seem realistic so I agree photoshop is unlikely.

It seems the photo came from FB but I have not seen any text that accompanies it.

Hmmmmmmm...?

I don't see that as an issue at all. I'm sure there ways with a pneumatic or hydraulic hammer, I'm just not that familiar with the process. Or as a long slow method, drill a pilot hole and use a masonry screw with a washer. I have done that.

That's not a common photo. If you saw some of the places I collected eggs from when I was growing up on the farm you wouldn't think twice about that.

People keep thinking how limited or helpless their chickens are. That has not been my experience.

My thoughts here were the relationship height wise between the upper nests and any roost bars.

Chickens tend to seek the highest point to roost, the upper nests are at least 6' off the floor. Roosts are most often much lower than that based on what I have seem/read.

I counted at least 10 cinderblocks, or 11. If the cinderblocks are 8x8x16 - the height estimate is 6.6 -7.3 ft.

The tires also look TOO CLEAN to be for roosting. Nesting boxes? as Ted said - not common. The most likely deduction in my opinion is that this photo might have been posed. If so, those chickens are very cooperative :)
