I got 4 polish chicks and have preparing for them for months. I’ve reasearced and asked questions since I know they are slightly different than other breeds to take care of. I have 6 other 8 month old pullets, so I’m not very new to chickens. I just like to prepare and think ahead. Well the feed mill I got them from didn’t sex them, but when picking he tried to get the biggest crests. But we had one problem with one of the breeds—the Silver Laced Polish. There were only two left (since we were a little late and got to pick from the last of the batch, although all are happy, healthy, and beautiful) and both had small “poofs” as I call them. I picked the bigger one anyways but it’s still significantly smaller than the 3 other chicks’ poofs and shows male characteristics.

I used this picture from a website and so far think that this one is my only boy. His name is Kevin. The good thing is, if he turns out to be a girl (yay!) then we can keep the name Kevin since in the movie Up, the big bird was Kevin and turned out to be a girl!

Well now that I’ve probably bored you with my story, here’s the picture I use for sexing by crest, and then some pictures of Kevin and his crest.

This website? I love it!
How old is he? Crest sexing tends to work best/only on day old chicks, if you miss that, you have to wait until their crests feather out. But I would say he looks like a cockerel :)
He's 2.5 weeks. I kinda hope he's a boy because he's so friendly and I want to breed next spring for some polish 'mutts'. He's the only one who's not scared of me and he's so adventurous. Such a troublemaker too! He'll jump off my lap and run around the living room floor, and I have to chase him before he poops! But I love him and would want him to be the rooster out of all of them. Because I'm only keeping 1 rooster, and it has to be nice and sort of quiet. He doesn't chirp much--although i know that can change--and like I said, he's the friendliest of the 4 I have. Terry the Buff Laced Polish is the next friendliest.
