Hello! Just rescued this black crested duck, and I took it in as there is a 3rd limb growing out of its crest. It seems well, and is super loving and sweet, as they’ve became close friends with my lone gosling(long story). Just wondering how many people have seen this, and or they’ve lived long, happy lives! I had a chick with 4 legs last year that I rescued, but sadly, he only lived 2-2.5 weeks, and I’m hoping he will live!

Wow that is not where I was expecting the extra appendage to be...I have no experience with this type of thing, but is the extra appendage putting any strain on the area of the skull that's open or immediately above it? My main worry would be that any extra pressure, pulling or tension from the appendage would increase the likely hood of seizures or other neurological issues even more so than what a typical crested is predisposed to. Honestly if a vet is an option I would highly consider it with the placement of the appendage and your duck being crested.

That's a very unique birth defect! What an adorable little one! I hope they do ok!

I would also see about going to an avian vet for a consultation if that is an option for you. I know sometimes vets amputate extra limbs. If not, they already have a significantly better chance at life since you rescued them!

I would be very careful about allowing normal mating for this little one when they grow up. Other ducks will probably try to hold onto the extra limb and might damage something inside the head. Crested ducks can already have issues with this and I feel like the extra limb makes this one even more vulnerable.

Please keep us updated about their progress!

As long as it doesn't have any other issues I think it'll be okay! Keep us updated
