During a weekly trip to the local feed store last month, they had finally received their ducklings for the season. The only had pekings and rouens this year but something immediately caught my eye. Out of the hundred pekings, I'd say about 10% were crested and none of the workers were aware that they had crested ducks. They mentioned that it must have just been thrown in or it could just represent the rate of this genetic deformity. When I looked down at the rouens, I spotted only one that had a crest! Needless to say, I got really excited and persuaded the owners in letting me just buy the one duck because I had babies around the same age at home, and I had a Metzer order that was arriving the next day.
I had never seen any other breeds for sale with a crest other than pekings so this felt like a treasured find to me. I wish I could post pics from my work computer but it's monitored and it would be stopped immediately. This cute little guy's crested is multicolored and he has become very affectionate. After reading more about crests, I'm definitely going to keep a better eye on him and his behavior. very cute but nerve wrecking when you know what could happen.
