I'd be very careful with your crested female because the males can injure her grabbing her crest in mating. Your drake can also be injured pretty bad as you have seen. That is usually by another drake. I don't know how thick the skin is over the crest but under the skin is open skull. Depending on size of the crest depends on how open.
