I was thinking about breeding some crickets because Zuko goes through so many and they are a lot of $ when I add it all up. So what do I need to know about this?
i did this once to breed for some leopard geckos, crocodile geckos, tarantulas and various other things. They are totally not as easy as mealworms, but not impossible. The biggest challenge for me was keeping eggs warm, and keeping the crickets in their own container...homemade containers are a little rough...i used old mealmorm plastic tubs and modified them, but they kept getting out and running all over my room (and my moms house) which made my mom hate my reptiles even more than she already did and so i had to totally re build the bins to be really safe and i costed me a bit more than i had (speaking like someone who has way too many animals and only a once a week day job...while doing HS...oh, brilliant). Anyways, sorry i went onto a rabbit trail a bit...just saying, i would build them very secure. Here are a few articles i found helpful that cover everything pretty good...it does save money once you get it going...crickets are pretty costly when you are constantly buying them. oh, i think one of them says heating is optional...i tried no heating and they lived long and happy lives (long as in a few months) and didn't give me a single egg...they do much better when heated http://darkstar4life0.tripod.com/id6.html http://www.anapsid.org/crickets.html http://www.wormman.com/breeding_crickets.cfm
Oh, i saw zuko in another post a little while back...i think he had a cricket on his head He is a cool lizard...i always want more exotic reptiles, but seeing zuko made me want a bearded dragon.
you're welcome
I was up until a few months ago we moved and my mom was not budging on me bring a few thousand crickets on a 14hr car trip (in her car) so i fed them all before we left. I did bring the set up and hope to start breeding them again this spring. lol, thanks, i do, even after having to sell quite a few
