he can get the medicaid. My son gets it~

Politic's out of these responses by the way.Just one mother to another~

We lost our insurance 4 years ago when DH's company decided to downsize his job. Ever since it has been very hard to get medical care for me. DH was out of work for over 1 1/2 years. Now he works at Wallyworld and is happy to have the job. Our unemployment rate here in our county is over 10%. My daughter has been out of work over 1 1/2 years as well. Her unemployment just recently ran out so they are having it rough. They can't even get food stamps as they don't qualify because they own 7 1/2 acres. The government keeps saying the unemployemtn rate is going down no new claims but they don't say how many people have used up there unemployment and are suffering without help. Here its a pay as you go for medical help. Even the emergency room has a $150.00 charge before they will see you unless it is life threatening. If you need a test tis prepaid. I have had a problem for 2 weeks with a very bad pain in the right side of my chest. I had to wait until DH got paid to go to the doctors, they sent me for a test today which I had to pay 336.00 upfront. The test is negative so I have to go back to the doctors friday for a followup. In the meantime the tech says "Don't get discouraged they can give you another test and they will eventually find out what is causing the pain. DUH I will not be able to afford any more tests its either the test or our mortage. The mortage company doesn't want to hear you are sick they want their money. So I am left with a very painful side which is getting worse, no eds nothing until friday when it will cost me again to see the doctor so he can tell me I need more tests. We have always had insurance and have always been able to pay for our medical needs, If you have it hang onto it becaue not having it is very scary. Say what you want about this new health care bill but if it helps me get the care I need I am all for it. Truthfully I think the people who are against it have insurance and have never been in the positon of having to make the descision to go to the doctors or pay the mortage of electric. JMHO

I am not sure where you got that number, but this is directly from the IRS site:

SE tax rate. The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%. The rate consists of two parts: 12.4% for social security (old-age, survivors, and disability insurance) and 2.9% for Medicare (hospital insurance).

That is on top of the regular income tax, which your employer does not help pay since you are not an employee. It costs more than 8.1% more.

Your employer does not help you pay your income tax. It is directly withheld from your wages.

I don't have insurance and do have some health problems and do need to go to the doc but can't afford it. I still don't think it's right to make someone else pay for my healthcare.

ETA: It is also not right that we are gouged at every turn either. People should be able to afford health care, but more goverment interference in our live with them FORCING us to buy their coverage is NOT the way to go IMO.

I pay a lot less than $1200 per month for my so-so health plan. I understand that if something really serious happens, I'm covered. The smaller stuff I'll have to make payments on. I'm a diabetic and I work really hard to control it so that I won't have complications. Some people don't. I know people that just let themselves go and scream that nobody is taking care of them. I'm sick of making an effort to take care of myself and trying to save for a rainy day just to have the government suck my bank account dry to pay for the irresponsible people. Like I have said before, nobody minds helping the person that worked and paid into the system and had a catastrophic event. It's the dead weight and the cheats that are the problem. I'm really sorry that you have to pay $1200 for insurance, but I'd rather have you pay for your own than have me pay for it with higher taxes and lost wages. The idea that "only the rich will pay" is garbage. The ones that will bear the higher taxes are small businesses and their owners. When their tax costs go up they will raise prices and lay off workers. But hey, I guess that's OK because we can all go live on the dole then.

portion of post removed. Please stay civil.

I don't think my tax dollars should pay for anybody else's heart attack or falls off a ladder either. I also don't think that I should pay for anybody else's insurance. We are already taxed to death. The government has wasteful spending, fraud and poor management for every program it has. This will be no different. Socialism doesn't work. Utopia doesn't and cannot ever exist. The premise of socialism is that everybody shares the fruits of the labor. Those of us that labor have no desire to share the fruit with those that do not labor.

Well, that may be, but I used to pay about 20% taxes when I was not self employed and it being self employed it has always been around 35-37%, even though I make less money. I also have never gotten a dime back being self employed, whereas I used to qualify for tax refunds when I was employed.
