Crime and the economy

Well I am not into politic,or all of that, but from my own experiance, I think the ER is nothing but a rip off, I have no insurance since 2003, and last may ( as I mentioned on here before) I had cut my thumb and went to the ER, I had to wait for two hours bleeding, then they gave me two pain killer taplets and a shot of morfin, and they said oh sorry yu have t go tomorrow to louisville to get a surgery.
Doc at 1 ER seen me for about 5 minuts max send me a bill for $600
er send me a bill for $2400 and they reduced it for me for $1200 because I have no Insurance.
So they looked at me for total of 30 minuts for about $3000, that is a robery.
Then the next day billes were about $25000.
So IMO they need to put a gap on all this roberies and then let all of us have insurance, I never took any unemployement, no food stamps, or nothing from the GOv, but I am an independent Landscaper who can not afford a $500 health insurance each month.

We had a similar plan "healthy families" where if you were broke enough you could get coverage for your kids at $20 per month per kid, but that program got funding cut bad, and it isn't taking any more kids, and is phasing out some kids who were already covered.

I dont know about kids..but..if i rememebr correctly when we looked into it for ourselves..it wasnt anywhere near $20 a month...but then again we ARE in MA.

WHat, National Health Care? Like Canada? Is that what they are trying to pass?

No, it's not like Canada. If you are uninsured you will be able to buy insurance at a reduced rate depending on income and family size. There will be a public option which is a bunch of different plans that can be purchased through the gov. It will be portable and will stay with you with the same benefits wherever you move in the US. If you have insurance already you can keep it. Hopefully the price will go down because the gov plans will cost less and have better coverage with lower co-pays and deductibles. All the govt offered plans will have no waiting period for coverage and will have no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

There is a lot of fear mongering on this. The big health carriers are afraid of the competition and are worried about losing their huge profits. United Health cares CEO has a contract for 1.7 Billion dollars in compensation over the next 10 years. Makes you wonder why health insurance is so expensive.

There is no fear mongering on this. There are people who have seen nationalized health care FAIL miserably in every other country that has it, and they don't want it to happen here. Tell me why people flock to America for surgeries if their national health care is so great. I'm sorry, but you can't hear the stories coming from the horses mouths and tell me we should move into that barn, too.

It amazes me that anyone thinks the government is going to run healthcare better than they run the IRS, and the DMV, and the post office, and I'm sorry but I've BEEN in waiting rooms full of government health care recipients. IT SUCKS!

If you want the government to take care of all of your problems, move to a country where they already do that. You'll be back soon.

Plus..how are they going to pay for it? Everyone knows nothing here is free..it would come out of our pockets in some way...

THANK YOU!!!!

Ain't NUTHIN free, ladies!!!

BTW, look it up if you don't believe me... They have said that EVERYONE will see a tax increase to subsidize 'free' healthcare. Even people who pay nothing and get rebates and EIC, THEY will get less of it because they WILL be taxed.

ALSO, doctors and nurses and pharmacists and RESEARCH COMPANIES will not be making the money they make now. Sure, some of you say WOOHOO, but do you really want to have your mother's cancer treated by someone who doesn't have the incentive of earning money??? Do you think we'll have breakthrough new drugs to treat Alzheimer's and cancer? When you pay a ton of money for your medicine, you're funding the research of ten other drugs. That's how it works. God help us if the government takes over healthcare. Please, do some research on this besides reading threads and blogs.

There was a thread on the board not long ago that had many people from those countries state that they were glad that they had their system over ours.

If failing = the longer life expectancy that those nations enjoy, I'll take it. As a military brat, I enjoyed government health care throughout my childhood. We had good care and NEVER had to wait. Medicaid is a government health care plan, already covering millions of Americans.

Our current system leaves much to be desired. You want to talk long waits? When my DH needed to go see a rheumatologist recently, as a new patient it took him 6 months to get in, and that was with strings pulled.

If those systems had truly "failed" you would see their populations fighting for change (like is happening here). If the government is so inept, don't opt for their plan. I also would like to know why the big insurance companies are fighting this so hard if they truly believe that they can compete? Unhappy with a public plan, switch to private.

I would trust the government more then some company out to make a buck by denying my treatments and coverage. They aren't benevolent, they are businesses, and will treat you in the way that best impacts their bottom line. No matter what line they are trying to spin.

I chat regularly with people in the British NHS. You have NO IDEA what they are going through. Bad dx, unable to get medication, no way to switch doctors if you get stuck with a complete boob...

(Spain also has national health care)

You think health care is bad and expensive now (and it is), just wait until it is "free"

Personally, I think all health care should be required to be not-for-profit. Insurance included. The profit motive and doing your best for patients does not go hand in hand. A corporation is beholden to the stock holders first, not the patient. At least with government health care we are the "stock holders".

I agree.

Of course there are issues with any system. Any time you involve people you are going to have problems. However, with 50 MILLION people uninsured, and that number growing all the time, our system is among the worst of the developed nation. We are not a third world nation, we are among the wealthiest.

We have some fantastic doctors and nurses, but for every story you find of someone suffering from poor decisions in other systems we can find them here due to "denial of coverage". Add onto that the fact that the majority of bankruptcies are due to health care costs.

Capitalism and the free market can be a great thing, but leaving it in charge of our health care system can lead to disaster, as we are seeing for many Americans. We are a nation of bright, compassionate, educated people, we can do better.
