Crime: Why does anyone even bother?

If those are an option then that would still be "having food"

There are people in this world, some in the US that die every year for lack of food.

I don't really think this is about food. Stealing food because of starvation would be way down on the list of things someone might be prosecuted for.

Mostly, people steal stuff so they can get money to buy drugs. It is a very vicious cycle. You would probably be amazed at the number of crimes that are tied to drugs, legal and illegal.

Yea I dont think this was about food ether but it was brought up...
I dont condone theft.... Even with my niece in jail waiting to go to trial for a alleged jewelry Heist.

I currently know of 3 teenagers that have served time for stealing.
2 of them come from very wealthy local families and grew up with everything a person could want or need.
Not 1 of them gave any thought to their victims and they all thought they were too smart to get caught.

We have all seen the forensics shows and wondered why anyone would bother to steal or commit a crime when science has had so many major advances in the last 30 years.
I have to wonder if all of these informational shows are simply teaching people what they have to do to get away with it.

Yeah, they do that all the time here. Do some stupid crap to get locked up, get free medical care on the countys dime and then try to escape. Last guy that ran from DH did exactly that. Leaving from the emergency room, he tried to escape, in chains and leg irons. Don't know how far he thought he was gonna get. As it turned out, about 20 feet, before falling flat on his face.

Okay, let's all put our heads together and come up with the appropriate punishment for this. There's a methhead couple sitting in our county jail right now. Their less than a month old baby is in a hospital in Texas, on life support. The baby has 17 rib fractures (do you know how hard it is to fracture a baby's ribs????) and a brain that the doctors say is no longer capable of supporting its life, having been shook inside the baby's head so much it turned to mush.

The baby will be taken off of life support on Monday.

Should I feel sorry for this couple? Should I try to understand their perspective? Perhaps they had rotten childhoods, boohoo.

I have the oak tree. Anybody got the rope?

Barring that, I think they should be put in the general population in prison (not in solitary to protect their worthless lives) and made to wear t-shirts that say "I killed my baby". Let them get their "undestanding, sympathetic ear" from the other inmates.

And by the way Elizabeth, you need to keep in mind that the laws in Australia may be very different from the laws in other countries, like the US.

I just checked with DH. There is no town ordinance against panhandling. The officer is expected to use his best judgement. Depending on whether it appears to the officer that the person panhandling has a genuine need, in which case it's not uncommon for the officer to give them a lift to the local soup kitchen or whether it's just one of the locals that are too lazy to work for a living, in which case they will be run off IF a business or resident complains about them being there. They won't be jailed or fined.

I did hear about some cities prohibiting "begging" and/or "pan handling" but not sure on the punishment or if it went through.
