Oyster shell is calcium carbonate. It's not so easily absorbed by some hens, even some women. The particles in oyster shell, once they're reduced in size to mostly powder, are flushed through the hen's body too quickly to absorb the calcium from them. So this is why it's necessary to check the condition of the oyster shell you've made available to your hens and top it off with fresh on occasion.
