Hi! I have a friend who just started her first flock. They are 4 weeks old. She has a Red Star with a beak that doesn't close properly. The top doesn't meet the bottom, it goes off to the side. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thankyou!

how bad is the alignment?

some birds can live happy healthy lives with a crooked beak just make sure the feeders are deeper then usual ..if it is really bad you may have to consider culling the chick...

we have a khaki campbell with this. she does really good and is agressive to get to the feeder. she is not smaller than the others or anything. best of luck :)

It really depends upon how much it affects the chicken's grown, if at all. I've got a banty with a twisted beak. She does just find eating, though she does have some challenges with picking up things off of hard surfaces (like crumbs off pavement). She's pretty feisty, though, and does ok. She's more likely to have things stolen from her because she drops food.

Your friend should ensure that the feeder is deep enough for the twisted beak bird to eat. This helps in many cases.

If your friend's bird fails to thrive, the bird will have to be culled. In any case, this hen should not be permitted to breed.
