Crop surgery

Both came open. The crop is what I stitched closed. It seemed smaller than the external incision. She just keeps picking at the feathers around it and I don't want her to pick it open. I cleaned out A LOT of feathers out of her crop. I will continue to clean it and apply antibiotic ointment.

I live in Rancho Cucamonga, ca.

Yes,she will pick it open, best to keep it covered or put a collar on her so that she cannot pick at incision.

Do they make cones of shame for chickens? We were just going to wrap it and watch her.

You would have to make a cone(not sure how big your girl is)a cone can be made from a large plastic drinking cup(disposable ones)cut bottom out, place over head and adjust for fit. Has to be long enough that she cannot reach wound, but still able to eat/drink.

That's sounds easy compared to the rest of the evening. We have plenty of plastic cups around. Thanks for all your advice, it has saved me :)

One more thing, what should I expect from the opened external incision? Is new skin going to form over it? Is it always going to be a problem? I'm just concerned and want her to get better. She is one of my favorites and my four year old son's as well. Thanks again for all your help.

For the external incision, keep moist and clean couple times a day with a saline solution, wound will heal from the inside out.
