Ingredients
4 cups bourbon
2 bunches fresh spearmint
1 cup distilled water
1 cup granulated sugar
Powdered sugar
Directions
To prepare mint extract, remove about 40 small mint leaves. Wash and place in a small bowl. Cover with 3 ounces bourbon. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in paper toweling. Thoroughly wring the mint over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times.
To prepare simple syrup, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of distilled water in a small saucepan. Heat to dissolve sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.
To prepare mint julep mixture, pour 3 1/2 cups of bourbon into a large glass bowl or glass pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bourbon.
Now begin adding the mint extract 1 tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste-generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it's right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to "marry" the flavors.
To serve the julep, fill each glass (preferably a silver mint julep cup) 1/2 full with shaved ice. Insert a spring of mint and then pack in more ice to about 1-inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to 1-inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep.
When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Serve immediately.

It was a mere 99 degrees (37 and a bit) today. A grand start to summer! Not much of a run up, either, just nice spring weather to this, quick, quick!! My pretty tomatillo laid down to rest so I will stake it up tomorrow. I got artichokes and a few more peppers today at work. Artichokes are very rare in the area just now as is okra, strawberries, and Serrano peppers. I have waiting lists I carry for certain vegetable plants, can you imagine? And we actually sell starts of such things as bean plants and corn! There is a reason 2 year old children are given the bean seeds to plant, any idiot can do it, the roots are sensitive, and it's pretty much always successful. And corn? Who buys corn starts!?!
Uh oh, venting again, sorry...
Anyway, I have to go put the babies to bed. I think that the older chickens pinch the younger ones so they are scared to go in, silly babies!
Hubby is engrossed in The Avengers. I missed the beginning so am ignoring it as hard as I can.

Never grown Artichokes before! Did grow Serrano peppers last year though, pretty spicy! I know I think the same thing every time I see corn set outs--What! You can usually barely buy enough anyway to get a good crop, I always grow mine from seed. And The Avengers is an awesome movie!!

I'm off to Raleigh today, my sister is coming in from New Mexico so I will be spending the day with her, my Dad, my Sister in Law and neices and nephews. Tomorrow is Kentucky Derby day, so I will be having some people over for Mint Juleps and shenanigans. Roping and selling chicks on Sunday after church. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

. Ahh mint julieps that takes me back to days gone by derby week ,,, I used to attend the oak,s race every year infield seats what a good time ,,,, You have to do it at least once in your life put it on the bucket list
Well then......on to my bucket list it goes, oh how that thing does grow!

Yippie, thanks for that. It's my birthday on monday so maybe I'll treat myself! I owe myself some more whiskey anyway and I love mint so it's the perfect combination! :)
 
You can get nonalcoholic mint juleps at Disneyland, off all places. I like planters punch, too, maybe too much.
Still chaos at work today, I feel like a leaf blowing in a tornado lately. I do NOT own the garden center, the corporation does, bless them. If it was my garden center it would be run very differently. But I get benefits and a 401k and bonuses. It's one of the better huge corporations I've worked for. I am probably not their best employee, though, I will tell people how to do it themselves and am painfully honest about suitability of plants for a certain situation, and of course give the ding and dent plants away for free. If there is a chance that an average person can revive something rather than us tossing it, off it goes.
And I always recommend the cheapest and most effective solution and never try to sell people stuff they don't need. We have to sit through classes on what they call selling attachments but I am not doing it.
