her in a towel and covering her eyes if you can.
x2 on wrapping. I use an old pair of jeans and just wrap the legs around the bird's body so you end up with a denim football of chicken. If possible I get some fabric over the eyes too, as that does seem to help calm them (plus filing makes a lot of fine debris). I sit down on a step and tuck the bird between my thighs, and then you can take your time doing maintenance.
 
And often times, the cross beak is not the only genetic issue. Often times these are not real long lived birds because of other genetic issues that you can't see.

I am very impressed with the above posters 9 year old cross beak. My experiences have never had them succeed like that.
Well I realized more recently she’s completely missing (no scar) the same toenail on both feet!
