Hi everyone!!
I hatched my first lot of barred rock chicks coming up 6 weeks ago! I have a purebred rooster and 7 purebred hens which I collected eggs from. I also have a couple of other little hens that were in with them and I thought I was careful not to select their eggs for incubating. Now I’m questioning if I have accidentally incubated 2??
I have 3 cockerels and 2 definite purebred pullets. But I’m a bit confused about the other 2 and their barring.
See pics attached of the darker vs definitely purebred pullets. They’re much darker with very little barring compared. Can this happen with purebred pullets or do you think possibly they are xbreds?
I have since removed my other hens so I won’t have this oopsy and can be certain for next time! Lol

Im not an expert but the darker ones look like barred rock pullets to me. I think some variation lighter/darker is normal. I had a pullet with a lot of white. I was concerned she was a rooster because I looked at tons of pictures of barred rock pullets online a lot of them were dark like yours.
Just my guess. I suppose they could be mixed as well.

Thanks for your reply, I thought the same but they just seem to be so much darker than the other 2 girls! I suppose I’ll just have to impatiently wait to find out!! :)

Those hens both have barring, so it’s going to be very hard to guarantee that any of the chicks are purebred. Their offspring could look like barred rocks even if they’re not.
I only collected one days eggs for incubation (8 eggs laid out of 9 hens and 7 incubated) so it’s only possible for 2 of the 7 chicks to be cross bred. I did think I picked only purebred eggs as they are larger than the small hens one but I am just a bit confused at the fact 2 have far less colour and barring. So wondered maybe I had mucked it up! I suppose I’ll never know as like you said, they have barring too!!!! Thanks for your help!! :)
