Crossing Cornish with others....

A reverse cross does not work the same, no. It has something to do with an unequal distribution of genes between the sexes.

I wouldn't describe the Dark Cornish as any more/less territorial than the others. He has a decent harem following him around and is in the upper handful of roosters in the pecking order. But, there are some bigger boys, too, that he wouldn't dare mess with.

By the way, I find the Dark Cornish beautiful birds. If I had to keep one breed, aside from my broilers, they would be it. They look like little falcons.

Thanks for the info. I think I've got genetics questions now.

Does anyone sell Dark Cornish hatching eggs by chance? I have some Saipan pullets and am wondering if I were to cross with a D Cornish roo... hmmmm

Sure, lots of folks, if you want birds from hatchery stock. Or you can just order some from a hatchery.

Good luck finding anything even close to the breed standard. Not even show quality, just in the ballpark with show quality. If you find any that good, please tell me. I've been looking for a while, now. I did find one breeder I might be able to get some eggs from in the spring, if they have enough to part with any.

If I am fortunate enough to acquire any Cornish that are close to the SOP, I will definitely be breeding those and selling eggs from them. Not as SQ or SOP, but as the closest I could get.

I, too, have never found Cornish breeders (except for banties). It's an underappreciated breed.

The 'Indian Game' is very common over in England, sad we don't appreciate it as much here.

Yeah, I never dreamed that Cornish would be the hardest one to find. Who'da thunk it?

I've found sources for Dorking, Buckeye, Delaware, and Faverolle, all breeder stock, either SQ parentage or at least rare breed conservancy parentage, not commercial hatchery.

I just need to track down Cornish, then this spring I'll get eggs, cross my fingers for good hatch rates, and get started with phase one, hatching and raising my breeding stock. If I can't find Cornish, I'll go ahead with the others, and keep looking. My breeding experiments will just have to take a different tack until I get some Cornish.
