Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

Picture day... I weighed my next CX Meal and I am less than an hour away from processing him and possibly a Nuisance cockerel/Rooster who is disturbing some of the hens. I took some pictures of the CX Cockerel with the 3 ration fed pullets.

He weighed in at 6 pounds even just one day short of being 7 weeks of age.

That's a fat little rooster. I'd be interested in how you (and your neighbor) find this tastes compared to the dorking and NN mixes.

This Rooster was processed with the CX. I forgot to weigh him and I am not certain his age... estimate 20 weeks old. 1/4 Ayam Cemani, 1/4 Red Ranger, 1/2 Naked Neck. His meat turned out to be a bit of a shock to me because it didn't match his Comb color or what I thought what was his skin color.

The CX, 6 pounds at 7 weeks.

Here is the shock, Black meat! Actually its more grey with some spots being black in the drum sticks. I knew it had Ayam Cemani genes in him but I thought because the Comb and Waddles were bright red then he wouldn't have black meat. I was wrong.

Nice CX product. You will have plenty of white meat tonight.

I forgot to add, the NN cross looks very similar to my NN keeper rooster. Almost the same coloring. The loser NN in my two-roo contest is going to be processed tomorrow. Loser-roo was 4.8 lbs when I weighed him a couple of days ago. I'm really hoping for over 3 lbs dressed weight.

I have no idea what happens to the meat color when cooked, its my first time ever processing grey/black meat. I was going to give the entire bird away because I have plenty of meat from the CX but now I am thinking of just giving away the hind quarters because I need to sample the breast meat to compare with a typical breast meat. looks like Chicken Tacos for most of the week.
I only processed that guy because he was chasing hens around to where they fled the yard and he flew over fencing to chase them. He had some uncles and a grand father who were the same way. His Uncles were delicious but did not have the Fibro trait at all like his mother did. It doesn't carry from the father to the sons but it carries from mother to all her children it looks like even if they have bright red combs.

Well, isn't that why you were trying to experiment in crossing them, to see how the fibro gene would work out?

So glad that the rooster/Cockerel dressed out today turned out to be a bad boy so I could find out.
