I need help.

Okay. I have a 2 year old salmon faverolle hen. She's definitely a girl she's laid many eggs.

Well about 3 months ago... She just stopped. Not another egg.

At first she was molting. Okay that's fine chicken.
Then it was HOT. Okay that's fine chicken.

But lately here it's not hot I see no reason this chicken isn't laying. I've been keeping an eye on her weight watching for signs of illness. Nada. She's a perfectly healthy non laying 2 year old hen.

Well this morning I hear my silkie rooster out there crowing his first crows. So Dammit I run out there as living in a city they have a no roosters allowed policy. I watch in shock and awe as

HALF THE CROWING IS THE DAMN SALMON FAVEROLLE HEN.

Has anyone had a crowing hen? Do they stop? Once they have decided upon rooster life do they ever go back?

I mean technically she's a proven hen but somehow I'm guessing animal control isn't going to be happy if she crows her head off every morning....... *photo of her infernal fluffy self*

The code must specifically state "No Roosters". I'm sure it doesn't state "No Crowing Birds". You've got them on a technicality.
It is rare, but not unheard of to have a hen that crows. SFs are usually very low on the pecking order so I'd say it's rarer still to have a SF start to crow.
Maybe she's crowing in a domination response to the silkie cockerel starting to crow. If you already planned to remove the silkie cockerel when he started crowing, I'd do so ASAP. This may or may not make your SF stop crowing.

Wonders if anyone has ever fought that battle? Am betting there's also a 'noise complaint' loophole.

Could very well be...and, yes, get rid of the cockerel asap.

Have had a crowing hen, during her winter molt she crowed duets with the cock and helped him herd the birds...it went on for a few months then she stopped when she came back into lay.

I had a hen that not only crowed, but would even mount other hens! She was in a pen with just girls because a predator had killed both my rooster's back then. Got another rooster and within a couple weeks she quit all that crazy behavior. :gig

Now that is funny! :lau

One of my hens crowed for a little while about a month ago. This started happening right after I got rid of the rooster in her pen, so maybe she felt the need to take over his role? I don't know. I haven't heard her crow in awhile now so maybe that phase is over.

I don't know if this has any sound science behind it but I've always hear that if hens aren't exposed to the pheromones from a rooster, then some hens may turn hermaphrodite and take over the role of rooster.
Who knows? :idunno

this is definitely a laugh or you cry.

The silkie rooster will be going back to his breeder (she has a rooster return policy thank heavens) as soon as possible. HE is currently locked in a big guinea pig cage in the garage so that at least if he decides to continue its muffled....

I don't want to know if I am going to end up having a fight with the city about a crowing hen. I mean the ordinance states Roosters are prohibited. But if someone wants to take me on about the noise ordinance... I'm not sure I'll win there.... I would fight it but not to the point where they remove my permit...

I am hoping that like some of you. Its a momentary thing and she stops? I mean I don't care if she lays she's a pet (in with 2 other silkie hens). But I can't be having noise complaints!
