My "red sex link" hen was crowing this morning, just as loud as a normal rooster would! She's 6 months old now and right now is living by herself because her beak is messed up and she can't eat very well so she gets special treatment lol! Is it possible for hens to crow, or do i actually have a rooster? She's been declared a 'red sex link' and a 'girl' by everyone on here since she was a week old! (i just went back through all my old posts too and double checked, yup!)

At six months, is "she" laying? Do you have a rooster in the flock? She may be acting as rooster if there isn't one. Have you posted a picture of her recently, at six months, to see if the consensus is still that she's a she?

I have heard that flocks without roosters can get a hen that takes his place and acts the part. I have also heard people say you can't be a hundred percent sure of sex of a chicken until they crow or lay. So... Maybe you need to post another picture and make sure she is a she? Under "What Breed or Gender is This?"

Good luck.

Agreed. We need an updated picture. A hen really crow "just like a rooster". The male's body is so much taller and stronger that it is really, really loud and sustained in nature. The hens DO crow, if they attempt to take that role, but normally, their "crow" is ugly and pretty pathetic.

i have a supposed to be easter egg chicken but i heard crowing one morn and it was her/him. this happened a,mth ago..they are 4 mths old and now my leghorn roos crow all the time but i havent heard her/him crow since then.. and the crow was pathetic when she/he did crow... so is it possible that a hen can crow..

My hen started crowing today, and she lays eggs AND there is already a rooster (two, actually) in the flock.

Must be just another chicken oddity.
