Ok, so I'm really new to the chicken scene. My babies just turned 15 wks, and we've been having trouble sexing them. We were pretty sure that one of them was a rooster ( feather shape, coloring, etc) with a possibility of one other being a rooster as well. This morning I actually got to see the chicken that was actually doing the crowing every morning....to my surprise, it was neither of the two!!! As a matter of fact, it was one that I was almost 100% sure was a hen. I'm really confused now.....I've read that hens may also crow, but exactly how common is this. Thanks in advance for any input you all may have.

Welcome to BYC!

Hens sometimes make a sort of crowing noise if there are no roos in the flock, as a sign of dominance, just as they will sometimes climb on the backs of other hens as if mating them. But this is usually seen in older birds, not those just coming of age like yours. I imagine the one you saw crowing is a roo.

Best chance at a good ID is to post pics in our "What Breed or Gender is This?" forum.

Thank you!!! I will post some pics

It isn't unheard of. I have a 7 month old black copper marans pullet that crows every day, multiple times. She does it in the morning, afternoon and whenever she wants attention actually. She may be the exception, but she is most definitely a she. Good luck with your chickens!

Hello and welcome to BYC

I've only seen one of my hens "crow" once - when she nearly fell off the washing line

Do as Flockwatcher suggested and post some pics so we can help you sex them.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I'm already reaping the rewards of everyone's expertise. I'm ending up with more roosters than I thought I had...lol but what the heck, I love em anyway

I have a photo album I downloaded of all of my chickens. Is that available for everyone to see or just me? If everyone can see it....I'd welcome everyone's opinion on both gender and breed. Like I said, I'm very new to this...we adopted these guys from a friend when the mommy hen was killed by a fox. And, from what I understand, the mom was notorious for stealing other hen's eggs. So as to the breeds of these chickens, I'm clueless
