Crowing Hens or Roosters?

Thanks so much everyone for all the great info and such a warm welcome to BYC.

I suspected the birds were mixed early on, because I saw his set up. The breeds didn't matter that much to me. Even if I'd ended up with a roo or two, that would have been acceptable and understandable. However 7 of the 9 is more like he picked out roos and made a mistake with the two girls. I suspect he may have a little dementia. He's an older guy living alone with a dog and over 300 birds. He may have been sharp at one time, but I think he's lost control of his breeding program.

It's obvious to me that Frosty and Rerun look much different, but I was wondering if that was a breed difference as much as a gender difference. I even commented to my family that the two girls look more like oversized pigeons....lol.

Further photos of that bird posted later in the thread reveal this bird is also male.

Yep, Urban Sunshine, you are right. That is Frosty. She and the little black one pictured in subsequent posts are pullets. The other white one pictured later is Daisy, and she's a he.

Couldn't get in touch with the breeder today. Will try again. Here's another question. I've got a neighbor interested in possibly buying a roo or two or maybe even swapping for hens. He wants to know which of my three Barred Rock Mixes looks to be the most Barred Rock. Here they are again. What does everyone think? I'm thinking the first one.

The first bird looks like he could be pure barred Rock. He has two copies of the barring gene, giving him that lighter overall look. The other two only had one barred parent, giving them the darker look, muddier barring and other colors coming through. If you can find someone who wants to swap for hens, go for it! Although, no offense, but you might want to post a pic of the "hens" before hand, unless you trust this person and are confident in their sexing.
