Crows and Ravens

Quote:
That's their strategy. They do this to killdeers and other shorebirds all the time. Young and inexperienced parents make the mistake of leaving the nest exposed. More experienced parents don't make that mistake that often even when several crows or ravens attack them.

i have never had crow's at my house but this year i've had a group that comes every day.My chicken's hide from them but my duck's will chase them away.

My girls haven't started laying yet, but the crows won't be able to get in the pen where the eggs are. That was actually one of my concerns, but If a crow can get through chicken wire and into a locked coop I will be scared. I know they're smart birds, but still...that would be scary:oops:

Do you know if you are cruel to a crow and are seen doing something like shooting them, then the crows that live see you as the bad guy, they then in turn tell other crows, who tell their kids, and so it goes on. Im the end crows know your face, they are smart enough to tell others and you are forever known as the bad guy and they can gang up on you. Your face stays in their memory for upto 5 years. I will get a link and post it

I saw a Nature program about that. Very interesting. And, I feel that it's not just crows, but a LOT of different birds species. I've heard that some geese can remember someone for the rest of their lives. I'm not sure if that's true, but I know they have very long memories.

They did a study on pigeons and found that pigeons can recognize and remember people's faces and who has been mean or friendly towards them.

We had chickens last year but did not have any crows. We got some ducks this year and they are everywhere. My ducks chase them when the come too close, but when the ducks are free ranging the crows have a field day with the feed. None of mine are laying age yet, but we'll see how it goes. We had tons of hawks last year but haven't seen any since the crows showed up. If they only eat the feed, they can stay!!!!!

as soon as our chickens and ducks were moved outside, our backyard became the local crow hangout. They steal any food we throw out for our birds. At first, they would walk around on the ground with the flock, then the chickens started chasing them off - now its a game they play all day: the crows trying to steal food and the chickens hunting for crows. I don't mind the crows except they arrive before we (my husband, myself, and the flock) have gotten out of bed and sit outside our bedroom window calling - which wakes everyone up. I also don't like the fact that im spending money to feed the crows; if my birds have picked at something and are done with it-i don't mind the crows taking it, but many times they are stealing the food before i've even gone back in the house.

if this is the extent of the damage - i just let nature take its course; i guess it gives the birds something to do all day.... but now that im reading they cause harm to the birds I'm a little worried - is it just ravens that hurt the birds, or crows will also? and do they only injure when there are eggs around, or will they progressively get more aggressive??
