Crud on my new chicks feet

I just bought a couple of new chicks at a swap days here in Ross County Ohio. They have a a build up of crud on their toenails. What would be good to try and get that off? It is solid and hard but it is only on their nail tips. Would holding them with their feet in running water be good or should I use something else?

What should I do if her little toe skin does tear a little?

A dab of triple antibiotic ointment without painkiller (The painkillers tend to be toxic to chickens.) It will help prevent infection and the skin should heal on its own. Make sure the other chicks don't peck at it out of curiosity.
