Crusty Bum

Sorry the phone pictures aren't great. I am not sure what I am looking for.

Poor Lilly

I put her in a large box in the dark bathroom for now so I can keep an eye on her.
Could be a small prolapse thank goodness, you can deal with this, keep her quiet with food and water and keep her bum slathered in something to help heal. but she doesn't need to lay any eggs right now till this heals. if there is something protruding out that looks like it should be in take your finger with latex of some kind of glove like that and put some KY or Vaseline or olive oil and gently try to push it back inside. You may have to do it a couple times or more but hopefully it will stay eventually. Hopefully Lilly will recover quickly. You can't always discourage them from laying but at least you'll have her where if she does you can treat her right away.

Thanks, I hope she recovers. I don't know how long this has been going on but this was the first morning I found a bloody egg. I think she has been laying a couple times a week since the move. Our Golden Hybrid has been laying almost every day despite going through a complete molt (I know its her because of the size of the egg). And occasionally I had a 2nd egg so I figured it was the KC. Our mallard stopped laying completely when she started molting.

I used to ferment/sour their feed at my old house and haven't since I moved just because its been crazy. I wonder if Lilly's system has been missing the good gut bacteria from the fermented feed?

It could be, but I doubt nutrition has caused this. I don't recall whether you said or not, but do you have access to a Poultry Vet? Perhaps at your State Agricultural University? I believe that when this happened in Amiga's flock, her duck was given a few stitches to keep things inside. I've never dealt with such before, but what ML has told you is exactly what I've read to do. Best of luck

ETA: I switched from FF back to dry feed with no issues whatsoever about 1mo ago.

One time my cat ate some tinsil stuff off the Christmas tree. When he pooped he had tinsil and poop hanging out. We called the vet and they said to just leave it, not to pull it because it can cause other problems and or bleeding. We just left it and a few days later it cleared up (he pushed it out).

I bet your duck will be alright, just give it some time to fall off or whatever.

I don't think the FF would have anything to do with this, since it's hard for us to determine do you think it's a prolapse? I have been using ff with my flock since last Oct. till about 2 weeks ago, now I just mix up their feed and the warm ACV water the night before, I was having a problem with mold on the inside of my bucket, not in the feed but just felt I'd rather not have to deal with it at all so now just mix it the night before. The egg production and gut are 2 different systems. they just happen to use the same vent for release. There are pics on BYC of chickens and probably ducks with prolapse maybe you can look at them and determine if this is what your dealing with.

I really don't know. It doesn't seem like its loose or falling out or wanting to fall out. But it is warm, swollen, raw, and scabby from the bleeding.

I am keeping her bum nice and moistureized and I think thats making her a lot more comfortable. The area looks the same it did yesterday but not worse and no scary protrusions that need to be pushed back in. She laid an egg this morning but it didn't make her bloody at all. Yesterday morning I could hear her struggling (outside) when laying, they are usually pretty quiet. But this morning even in the house I didn't hear her. I'm giving her another bath tonight right now to soften it up, clean it more and lube it up again.

Seems like she will make a recovery, I hope. She is bright & alert & extremely grumpy about being in the house so I think the inflammation/infection is local to that area and not spreading. I think she would be acting kind of dumpy if it were a bigger issue.

I think I will put her out with the other ducks and bring her back in if it shows any signs of getting worse. I have very few flies out there since they have lots of space to roam and lots of healthy grass to stay cool on.
